Calnetix Technologies to Present at 18th International Symposium on Magnetic Bearings
CERRITOS, Calif. – July 11, 2023 (PRWEB) July 11, 2023 -- Calnetix Technologies will be presenting at the 18th International Symposium on Magnetic Bearings (ISMB18) in Lyon, France from July 18-21.
Calnetix’s co-founder and Director of Technology for Magnetic Bearings Larry Hawkins and Principal Research Engineer Alexei Filatov will present a paper titled “PWM Filter for Active Magnetic Bearings”. The paper discusses Calnetix’s experience in using a Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) filter at the output of an active magnetic bearing (AMB) amplifier.
AMBs commonly utilize PWM switching amplifiers, which offer high efficiency but can introduce issues when used without output filters. These issues include electrical ground noises, radiated electromagnetic emissions from ripple and resonant currents, reduced lifespan of actuator magnet wires and power electronics, increased eddy currents and hysteresis losses, and challenges with long cables.
The filter topology chosen by Calnetix consisted of a ‘Trap’ filter, utilizing a parallel LC resonant circuit to suppress output current harmonics near the circuit resonance, followed by a conventional 2nd-order LCR filter. This topology is especially effective in a common AMB situation when the amplifier switching frequency is close to the upper limit of the required bandwidth.
The authors will present both analytical and experimental results that clearly demonstrate the benefits of using the filter, such as dramatic reduction of EMI and enabling the use of AMBs with long cables. In particular, the dV/dt on the amplifier output, which is largely responsible for the electrical ground noises was reduced by more than 800 times. The operation of a commercial 350 kW 15,000 RPM air compressor over a 1.2 Km cable was also demonstrated with the addition of the filter.
In addition to the paper above, Hawkins will also participate in the round table discussion on ‘Reinvent AMB Technology - Limitations & Perspectives’ along with other industry experts at the symposium.
The ISMB is held biennially to promote scientific and technological exchanges and to enhance the understanding and the dissemination of magnetic bearing technology among researchers and engineering practitioners worldwide.
