BURBANK, Calif., March 14, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- PUBLIC MEDIA GROUP OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA, formed by the merger of KCET and PBS SoCal, today announced a full month of environmental programming to honor Earth Day on each of its stations: PBS SoCal, KCET and Link TV. The innovative organization is committed to educating viewers through unique programming and telling stories that matter with original content that reflects the diversity of our region, and our world.

PBS SoCal has created a special lineup in honor of Earth Day that will run throughout the month of April that includes three episodes of the beloved national program NATURE that allows viewers to explore the splendors and compelling stories of the natural world from all over the globe. The lineup includes an all new multi-platform edition of "American Spring Live" hosted by acclaimed news anchor Juju Chang. Filmed in real time, the three-night event features ecosystems in iconic locations across America, with a mix of live and pre-taped footage.

KCET continues its environmental commitment to educate audiences about the global issues impacting our planet through special programming. KCET's curated series of documentaries focusing on environmental challenges and solutions, EARTH FOCUS PRESENTS, will air three of the most powerful "green" documentaries during April with topics that range from ecological responsibility and climatic change to the future of our species. April also marks the debut of KCET and Link TV's acclaimed original environmental investigative series EARTH FOCUS, in partnership with the Thomson Reuters Foundation. The new season of EARTH FOCUS examines how communities are transitioning to sustainable resources as global demand increases.

Link TV, the national independent non-commercial satellite television network, aims to engage, educate and activate viewers to become involved in the world. Link TV demonstrates its commitment to the environment by hosting a comprehensive lineup of planet-friendly programming that inspires viewers to take action. In addition to the debut of a new season of EARTH FOCUS and EARTH FOCUS PRESENTS, Link TV will also air new episodes of BIONEERS featuring social and scientific innovators with both practical as well as visionary solutions for the world's most pressing challenges. And it doesn't stop in April. Starting Wed., May 1 at 9:30 p.m. ET/PT, EARTHRISE, a series from Al Jazeera English, will debut on Link TV, taking an upbeat look at ecological, scientific, technological and design projects around the world, pioneering creative solutions to the environmental challenges we all face.

Earth Month Programming will air as follows (*schedule subject to change):

Streaming on KCET.org, LinkTV.org, YouTube, Amazon, Roku and Apple TV
One of the most diverse rivers in the United States, the Eel ran dry in 2014 for the first time in history. Once victimized by logging, damming and drought, the Eel faces new challenges from some of California's favorite commodities: wine and weed. The documentary makes a renewed case for regulation and collaboration in protecting this vital resource.

Google Earth Outreach founder and visionary engineer Rebecca Moore maintains that our life-support systems are in critical condition, and only recently has it become possible to monitor the health of Earth's life-sustaining resources in a manner both globally consistent and locally relevant. She shows how satellite data, cutting-edge science and powerful cloud computing technology such as Google Earth Engine allow us to achieve an unprecedented understanding of our changing environment and put this data into the hands of those who can take action.

Tues., Apr. 9 at 9 p.m. PT on KCET; Wed. Apr. 10 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Link TV- EARTH FOCUS PRESENTS: "Tomorrow"

Streaming on PBSSoCal.org and on the free PBS App
The egg is perhaps nature's most perfect life support system. These remarkable structures nurture new life; protecting it from the outside world while still allowing it to breathe. Eggs are strong enough to withstand the full weight of an incubating parent and weak enough for a hatchling to break free. Step by step as the egg hatches, host David Attenborough reveals the wonder behind these incredible miracles of nature.

Wed., Apr. 10 at 10 p.m. PT on PBS SoCal – OZONE: HOW WE SAVED THE PLANET

A documentary special about sustainability, the wicked problems that plague the world and how design and invention can be used as an antidote, the program highlights the Danish non-profit, INDEX: Design to Improve Life® (INDEX). The film explores their history as an international design competition while showcasing the most innovative INDEX award winners and their future goals.

Wed., Apr.17 at 8 p.m. PT on PBS SoCal - NATURE: "Big Birds Can't Fly"
Streaming on PBSSoCal.org and on the free PBS App
It may seem strange that among the more than 10,000 bird species in the world today is a group that literally cannot fly or sing, and whose wings are more fluff than feather. These are the ratites: the ostrich, emu, rhea, kiwi and cassowary. How and why these birds abandoned flight has puzzled scientists since Darwin's time, but DNA and dedicated research are helping to solve these mysteries.

Wed., Apr. 17 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on Link TV – BIONEERS: "Elizabeth Dwoskin - What We've Learned About Tech Giants"
Streaming on LinkTV.org, YouTube, Amazon, Roku and Apple TV
Elizabeth Dwoskin is the Washington Post's Silicon Valley correspondent covering the rise of data-hungry technology companies, online conspiracies, and Russian meddling on social media. She was part of the team that broke over a dozen stories on Russian operatives' use of Facebook, Twitter, and Google to influence the 2016 presidential election. She shines a light on our growing awareness of the dark side of Silicon Valley, and how that awareness is reshaping public policy, our understanding of democracy, and the way tech is used and built.

Fri., Apr. 19 at 2 p.m. PT on KCET – THE RELUCTANT RADICAL
This documentary features activist Ken Ward as he confronts his fears and puts himself in the direct path of the fossil fuel industry to combat climate change. The film reveals both the personal costs and the fulfillment that comes from following one's moral calling. The film follows Ken through a series of direct actions, culminating with an action that shuts down all the U.S. tar sands oil pipelines and threatens to put him behind bars for 20 years.

Tues., Apr. 23 at 8:30 p.m. ET/PT on KCET; Weds. April 24 at 9 p.m. on Link TV – EARTH FOCUS – New Season!
Streaming on KCET.org, LinkTV.org, YouTube, Amazon, Roku and Apple TV

Wed., Apr. 24 at 9 p.m. PT on PBS SoCal - NOVA: "Saving the Dead Sea"
Streaming on PBSSoCal.org and on the free PBS App
As the Dead Sea shrinks, engineers prepare a daring solution: connect it with the Red Sea by way of a massive desalination plant. If it works, it could stabilize the legendary lake and ease regional tensions. But will it put the environment at risk?

Fri., April 26, 2 p.m. PT on KCET – WATER FROM THE WILDERNESS: HETCH HETCHY TO SAN FRANCISCO
Streaming on KCET.org
This documentary traces the extraordinary history of San Francisco's water system as well as the engineering and delivery of an urban water system in the era of climate change. The 1906 earthquake spurred city fathers to create a public water utility. When the city chose a site in the pristine Hetch Hetchy valley inside Yosemite National Park, an epic battle was led by John Muir.
