Travel advisors, tour operators, media, and influencers enjoyed cultural performances and demonstrations from the culturally important destination during exclusive event at The Field Museum.
NEW YORK, April 27, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- On April 13, 2023, the Suzhou Municipal Bureau of Culture, Radio, Television and Tourism celebrated the city's rich cultural heritage, its position as a premier global tourism destination, and the re-opening of China's borders to international tourists with an exclusive cultural showcase in Chicago. Suzhou, a premier city of culture and art, is known for its more than 100 museums, so it was only natural that the Field Museum of Natural History was selected as the venue. Within the museum's Cyrus Tang Hall of China, guests were transported to Suzhou at the Sue Ling Gin Garden which features eight ancient spirit stones directly imported from the city known for its elegant classical gardens, romantic canals, storied performing arts, and intricate handicrafts.
Locally produced silk, Suzhou's most esteemed export and one of its most renowned ancient handicrafts, was the star of the evening. A representative from PTG Consulting, Suzhou's international marketing agency for English-speaking U.S., Canadian, and European markets, delivered a comprehensive presentation that educated guests on the destination, the important role silk plays in its culture, and silk-focused tourism attractions including the No. 1 Silk Factory, Suzhou Embroidery Institute, and more.
The Chicago based Yin He Dance company performed classical dances reflecting the Jiangnan area, incorporating traditional costumery and silk fans with flowing tails, along with instruments, such as Guzheng and Erhu which were traditionally constructed with silk strings, played throughout the start of the event. Members of the Chicago Asian Women Empowerment organization modeled silk garments that were modern interpretations of the Qipao from Chicago-based designer, Tanjerine Studios. Guests also received luxurious Suzhou silk eye-masks from Suzhou-based brand, Sang Shang.
"Suzhou's culture and heritage is the true essence of the city, and we are grateful to share the story of Suzhou silk with inquisitive Chicagoans," said Ashley Norman, PTG Consulting's Vice President of Marketing and Communications who has worked with the destination for the past seven years. "This was a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with the travel industry in person and discuss opportunities to help them encourage their clients and audiences to plan a dream trip to Suzhou."
