Cistor Ltd is Bringing sustainable IT to Manchester
Cisco Refresh Partner Expands its Circular IT Offering
CHESHIRE, U.K., Mar. 31, 2021 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- For the last 10 years, Cistor have been supplying reused and remanufactured computer networking equipment to clients who realise that the newest technology isn't always the best technology. Over the course of that decade, global awareness of the issue of e-waste (electronic waste) has been on the rise, and Cistor have been at the forefront of attempts to tackle this problem by persuading businesses to utilise reusable technology and extend the working life of existing technology. Acting as specialists in Cisco Refresh https://www.cistor.com/rf/, Cistor have pursued a Circular First approach, encouraging businesses to shift away from the standard IT purchasing cycle of a technology upgrade happening automatically every 3 to 5 years. The impact has been undeniable and spectacular – together with their clients, Cistor have reutilised enough technology to fill the Albert Hall.
Tackling E-waste
The issue of e-waste is real, global and growing. Factors such as scheduled product obsolescence and purchasing patterns which unthinkingly prioritise new product result in 53.6 metric tonnes of e-waste finding its way into global landfill every year. Looked at another way, this is a staggering 7.3kg per capita (source Global E-waste Monitor 2020). Even more disturbing than the sheer scale of e-waste is the fact that the material in question retains value, particularly when a shift in perception enables the items to be regarded as resources to be remanufactured rather than waste product.
Recycling is often regarded as the answer to e-waste, but it is a partial solution at best. The Cistor approach is to maximise the life cycle of IT equipment so that recycling shifts from being the inevitable end point to representing an occasional last resort. As things stand, only an estimated 20% of e-waste is recycled, and for Cistor this reinforces the need to shift the mind-set on the reuse of technology. The choice of Poynton as a UK base will help Cistor to popularise and embed that shift.
As Matt Archer, Purchasing Director of Cistor says, "We're really excited to be relocating from Surrey to Poynton in Manchester. We'll be delighted to support Manchester City Council's Climate Emergency Declaration and their Zero Carbon Action Plan. By reusing and extending the life of technology across businesses, we can address point 7 on Manchester's 15 Point Action Plan to be a more sustainable city. (https://www.manchesterclimate.com/15-actions) and we'd love to start talking to organisations in the City and further afield about how we can help."
As Anthony Levy, CEO of Cistor https://www.cistor.com/ explains more on Cisco Refresh "Over the past 10 years we've supported IT networking infrastructure in organisations as diverse as the Ministry of Defence, local councils, universities and key financial institutions. What these organisations have in common is that they questioned how they bought IT, considering how they could utilise effectively what they have, extending the life of their existing networks and systems by reusing, refreshing and blending in a small amount of new equipment. What we find is that this blended solution offers savings upwards of 20% on brand new IT solutions, but also, and most importantly, communities and the environment gain as we are utilising items that already exist. This protects landscapes from future mining, emissions from production and communities from danger at the end-of-life stage. We've seen awareness increase of fast fashion and single-use plastic and we want teams to rethink how they procure IT."
As Matt Archer, Purchasing Director adds, "Our facility in Poynton is the base for our UK operations, and from there we can supply next day delivery across the UK. We have a team of 10 based at the facility with the remainder of the team working remotely. Our European hub is in Aalborg- Denmark and we have operations in the US. Our Poynton facility has 200 solar panels on the roof which supply energy into the grid and all of our equipment is packaged in recycled cardboard. As a business we're committing to be carbon neutral by 2022 and we are developing an ambitious sustainability plan."
