CleanBay Renewables Sussex I Project Approved by Sussex County Council
In a unanimous vote, the Sussex County Council approved land use for CleanBay Renewables to construct and operate Sussex I, a renewable energy facility that will be located at the southwest corner of DuPont Boulevard (Rt. 113) and Breasure Road in Delaware.
GEORGETOWN, Del., Aug. 1, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ --In a unanimous vote, the Sussex County Council approved land use for CleanBay Renewables to construct and operate Sussex I, a renewable energy facility that will be located at the southwest corner of DuPont Boulevard (Rt. 113) and Breasure Road in Delaware.
Through its anaerobic digestion and nutrient recovery technologies, CleanBay will recycle 90,000 tons of chicken litter annually at Sussex I to create renewable energy for the region and significantly reduce the amount of phosphorus that remains in a soil amendment that can be used by local farmers.

The site will produce 5 megawatts of electricity that will contribute to Delaware Electric Cooperative's existing power grid, enough to power approximately 3,500 homes. The facility will also remove phosphorous from the chicken litter, making a small crystallized fertilizer that will be sold to farmers in the Midwest where the nutrient is needed to support agriculture. The remaining digestate will be available to area farmers to use as a soil amendment for their fields.
Sussex I will create more than 15 new full-time jobs and provide significant tax revenue. The capital cost for the facility is approximately $60 million.
The Council's vote follows the Sussex County Planning and Zoning Commission, which also approved the site plan by a 5-0 vote in February.
The project has received endorsements from the Delaware Department of Agriculture, Delmarva Poultry Industry, the Delaware Center for the Inland Bays and the Delaware Electric Cooperative.
As a next step, CleanBay will work with the County Planning and Zoning Commission to revise the preliminary site plan and the Delaware Department of Transportation to design the highway entrance to the plant.
The company revised its earlier traffic plan to better accommodate neighbors near the planned site after hearing their concerns. "CleanBay is committed to being a good neighbor in the areas where we operate and it was important to us that we got the plans for Sussex I right," said Spangler.
Construction will begin in 2019. CleanBay's facility in Westover, Maryland is under construction and slated to open in 2019.
The company continues to evaluate other locations in Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia for additional plant sites.
