Connecting the Visually Impaired and Blind Community with Information and Resources for Greater Independence
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (PRWEB) May 03, 2019 -- Lesa Kretschmer, owner and founder of the Florida Vision Technology Center headquartered in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, makes it her mission to educate the visually impaired and blind about assistive technology and resources for a better quality of life. Kretschmer travels extensively around the state attending conferences, seminars, participating in speaking events, as well as hosting her own events. Kretschmer provided a brief interview focusing on how the visually impaired and blind community can stay connected to get the latest information about services, products and resources for greater independence. When asked what people can do to get more information, Kretschmer responded, “It’s simple. Individuals can sign up on various organization websites, or their social media pages, to receive valuable news and event information. Kretschmer explained that special computer software that she carries at the Florida Vision Technology Center enables text to be read aloud, so information on websites and social media can be made more accessible.
Kretschmer added, “Education and information are key to living better lives with vision loss. Our Facebook page helps seniors and the blind and visually impaired community keep in touch with the latest news and events. We post a variety of information about upcoming webinars, agency resources for people with vision loss, and we let people know about other helpful websites that focus on low vision resources and services”. Kretschmer continued, “For example, on our Facebook page, we highlight new products that we think people should know about, and we invite people to local events and product demonstrations at our center”.
The Florida Vision Technology Center just hosted a Technology Presentation at the Tampa Lighthouse for the Blind. Kretschmer offered, “We also had an event at the John Knox Village Senior Community in Fort Lauderdale to share information about products that could help seniors be more independent. They got to try out equipment like portable video magnifiers and desktop magnifiers to see how it improved their reading ability. Additionally, we just sponsored an OrCam Demonstration Day at our Fort Lauderdale location to showcase one of our newest products that reads text aloud just by pointing to it”.
