Seal the envelope.
One of the easiest places to start, according to Lipford, is sealing up the perimeter of your home. Inspect all windows and exterior doors, and seal up any cracks with a quality exterior caulk. Homeowners should also pay attention to other protrusions on the home’s exteriors such as vents and hose bibs. Often, those areas will have larger cracks and expandable foam may be necessary to get a tight seal. Finally, Lipford recommends replacing any worn or damaged weather-stripping and ensuring a tight seal for exterior doors and thresholds. Securing these cracks and crevices will prevent wind and water from entering the home, and, as a bonus, make it more energy efficient.
Keep it clear.
Water damage is a major threat to homes during severe weather events. To reduce the risk of water damage, Lipford advises keeping gutters clear and offers a clever DIY solution to help remove debris. Clogged gutters can cause water to back up into the eaves and eventually overflow into the walls of the home. Lipford cautions homeowners not to forget about clearing downspouts and surface drains to keep water from backing up and causing problems.
Make the grade.
Foundations and basements are also susceptible to water damage during extreme weather. Lipford recommends creating a high-to-low grade for the landscape beginning at the foundation and sloping outward several feet. This will cause water to flow away from the home rather than pooling at its foundation and possibly leading to intrusion.
