It’s said by Motor City locals that the “D” in Jimmy D. Scott’s name stands for Detroit. That’s not merely about the singer’s love for his city. It’s also a measure of how much the city loves him back. The “Shakey Ground” clip highlights both his profound sense of place and his well-known love of fun. The video is full of Detroit references and sights: the skyline and bridges, the elevated train, the John C. Lodge freeway, State Street. But as grounded as it is in regional specificity, it’s also a work of fantasy. A scepter-wielding, dancing Egyptian goddess, large as a skyscraper, loves Scott’s music so much that she comes to Detroit to claim the object of her affection. Whether he’s rocking Motor City or among the immortals, Jimmy D. Scott is right where he belongs.
