Despite extensive public health efforts, new survival-prolonging therapies and record government spending, the mortality rate of this cancer has steadily increased over the past 50 years. Diagnostic imprecision of up to 48 percent and a lack of standardised molecular biomarkers are two factors that are thought to be contributing to Australia’s ongoing melanoma epidemic. As such, there is an urgent need for new, accurate and non-invasive methods to detect, diagnose and monitor this disease.
