JAMESTOWN, N.D., March 10, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- A determined girl betrothed to a local man at a young age begins a journey into the unknown where she must face many challenges she never expected in Beverly Westman's new historical novel, "Helen" (published by Archway Publishing).

Set in a fictional "old country," the story centers around a young woman, Helen, and her family, the lives of people she meets and the conditions of a devastated country. The traditions of families of means in Helen's world leads her father to promising his daughters' hand in marriage. The story tells of the marriage of two daughters. Helen is engaged to a local man, Gustav Krueger. Although Helen is overwhelmed by the fear of unknown in the betrothal, she marries Gustav.

By taking the reader to other places and times with the characters in the book, Westman hopes the story will instill "An appreciation for our ancestors" because readers can "visualize and feel what the characters and places felt and saw."

A tiny figure of a woman stood alone at the railing. She was no more than five feet tall, the top rail hid her face. As the ship moved slowly through the gentle waves, splashes of seawater surrounded her small feet, which were clad in black high-buttoned shoes. … She shivered as she pulled her fur-lined coat closer around her. The mantle shrouded her head, hiding the tears flowing from her huge brown eyes. As she clutched the rail, her mind filled with thoughts of home.
