Dr. Lorrie Cranor to Speak at Women in CyberSecurity Conference
PITTSBURGH (PRWEB) March 07, 2019 -- To help encourage the next wave of women in the tech field at the Women in CyberSecurity (WiCyS) conference, March 28 to 30, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, will be five esteemed keynote speakers. One of those is Dr. Lorrie Cranor, director and Bosch Distinguished Professor in Security and Privacy Technologies of CyLab and the FORE Systems professor of computer science and engineering and public policy at Carnegie Mellon University.
WiCyS is a unique conference that focuses on recruiting, retaining, inspiring and advancing women in cybersecurity careers while also including students, educators, industry, government, military and research organizations.
Cranor will discuss “Tales of an Accidental Computer Science Professor,” on Friday, March 29, 7:35 p.m. She will explore her interest in making privacy and security usable for everyone, research problems she has investigated and how she went from being a student journalist to a computer science professor. She also will discuss ways to attack security user study participants without putting them in any real danger, how she determined people will pay for better privacy while shopping online and how the “Today Show” camera crew ended up in her kitchen.
Cranor directs the CyLab Usable Privacy and Security Laboratory and co-directs the MSIT-Privacy Engineering master’s program. In 2016, she was chief technologist at the U.S. Federal Trade Commission. She also was a researcher at AT&T Labs and taught at the Stern School of Business at New York University. She is co-founder of Wombat Security Technologies, Inc., a security awareness training company. Cranor was recently elected to the ACM CHI Academy, named an ACM fellow for her contributions to usable privacy and security research and education, and named an Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers fellow for her contributions to privacy engineering.
In addition to her work, Cranor has authored over 150 research papers on online privacy, usable security and co-edited the book, “Security and Usability.” She also founded the Symposium on Usable Privacy and Security, chaired the Platform for Privacy Preferences Project (P3P) Specification Working Group at the World Wide Web Consortium and authored “Web Privacy with P3P.”
