FREE ADMISSION Announces Launch Of Web site Petition For New Yorkers To Sign Encouraging The State Attorney General To Follow Laws Regarding Free Museum Admission
Free Admission (FA, http://www.museums4allnyc.com), a new, comprehensive website dedicated to educating city- and state-wide New Yorkers on their rights to free admission to the Metropolitan Museum of Art (the Met Museum) and 12 other city-funded park institutions, is introducing an on-line petition for New Yorkers to sign starting May 15 and that will be sent to the State Attorney General, Letitia James, to encourage her to enforce the Law regarding Free Admission to the above museums.
NEW YORK, April 25, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- FA is launching a petition in response to the Met Museum's direct response to our outreach to its list of corporate and real estate philanthropists informing them of New Yorkers' rights – and the Museum's recent full-page ad in The New York Times thanking these financial contributors. We at FA strongly believe that this advertisement is in response to the good work we have been doing informing New Yorkers of their rights to free admission to this important institution and of the positive response we have received from many New Yorkers.
The petition, which will be linked to the Take Action! page on the FA web site, states the following in the "title": "URGE NYAG JAMES TO ENFORCE LAW REQUIRING THE METROPOLITAN MUSEUM OF ART BE "FREE OF ALL CHARGE" TO ALL NEW YORKERS – ESPECIALLY OUR SCHOOLS!"
Because FA wants school adults and students especially to know their rights, the Petition launch officially begins May 15, the day of Elementary School Parent/Teacher Conferences and the day before Middle School Conferences.
The FA web site's launch this spring marks the first time that all the information regarding admissions policies can be found in one place so that New Yorkers are now able to make objective choices when visiting these cherished and popular institutions – especially during the warm weather months when many families take their children to these venerable institutions.
The rights of New Yorkers to Free Admission to the Met Museum in particular is based on a law dating back to the late 1890s that lays out in detail that the Museum is to be free of charge to New Yorkers in exchange for rent forgiveness. This law is Ch. 476 of the Laws of 1893.
Please visit http://www.museums4allnyc.com at The FA Story for more detail.
Unrepealed and unamended Ch. 476 states that in reciprocity for its rent-free use of City-owned buildings on park land, that the Met Museum be open free to all New Yorkers five days, with one being Sunday afternoon, and two evenings in the week. FA estimates, based on the Met Museum's current 2,000,000-plus square foot size and allocating 10% of that size to exclusive retail space at $3,500 per square foot and the rest as office space at $100 per square foot, that the Met Museum reportedly receives rent forgiveness in excess of three-quarters of one billion dollars annually.
