Born in Erie, Pennsylvania in 1966, Jack grew up knowing he had been adopted. His story is like those of a lot of other adoptees in the 1960s, known as the Baby Scoop era. He didn’t look like anyone else in his family. He didn’t share expressions with any of them. He became a master chameleon trying to fit in, never quite feeling like he did.
All he had been told about his biological parents was that they were young college students who couldn’t afford to keep a child. It wasn’t until he was thirty years old that he learned the real story. In the book, Jack explains how he found his birth mother, and that what she tells him about his birth father changes everything about who Jack thought he was, sending him on a reluctant and subconscious quest to discover who he really was. “Recycled” explores the impact of being relinquished and adopted, and how secrets—even well-intentioned ones—can shatter decades of trust.

Neuroscience in 1988, and earned his medical degree from Temple University in 1992. He
