According to Richard Bell, President of Clean Cut Interlocking Pavers & Pools based in Lewes, Delaware, it's not too early to plan for a new pool and/or new decking around an existing pool for next season. Pent-up demand combined with production delays due to COVID-19 has caused a backlog of project orders for many contractors.
"Pool manufacturers are saying they've never seen so many orders; they're up 200 percent," he says. "Everyone is booked up, and we're seeing production delays of four weeks or more. It's actually smart to plan ahead and book a contractor to start a build at the end of this season. That way you'll have your project done so you can enjoy your pool and deck for the entire season next year."
When it comes to creating the ideal pool deck, today's contractors often recommend using pavers instead of poured concrete.
"If you need to fix a broken pipe or other underground problem, it's a lot easier to lift up individual pavers for the repair and simply put them back down," notes Bell, whose Hardscaping and custom in-ground fiberglass pool company is celebrating 25 years in business. "With a concrete pool deck, you have to saw cut and remove the concrete to gain access and then re-pour new concrete in its place, leaving a patch job that doesn't match. And concrete is eventually going to crack no matter what you do."
According to the experts at EP Henry, pavers are superior to poured concrete around pools because the joints take on moisture, leaving the pavement cooler to bare feet. They provide a slip-resistant walking surface and come in a variety of colors and patterns.
"Lighter colors don't get as hot as darker ones, so our clients usually stick to light earth tones or gray," adds Bell. "And larger pavers are more popular these days. We get a lot of orders for Bristol Stone and Chiseled Stone in the larger sizes. The number-one choice for our clients is Old Towne Cobble."
