Granny Basketball Round Up in Conroe
Texas and LA teams to meet.
As the NCAA Final Four arrives in Houston, another basketball competition will be taking place just up the road in Conroe, Texas. Six Granny Basketball teams from Texas and Louisiana will meet Saturday, March 25th from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The women, ranging in age from 50 to 80’s, will play at Peet Junior High School, at 1895 Longmire Road in Conroe. Admission is free to the public.
The event features old-fashioned, six-on-six competition basketball, as women used to play the game in the 1920s. Players dress in 1920s-inspired uniforms – black bloomers, middy blouses and sailor-style collars displaying each player’s number. Granny Basketball is a playful, fun-filled exercise activity that encourages active women 50 years old or better to stay fit in a non-traditional, social environment.
“We are excited to bring Granny Basketball to the southeast Texas area,” said Chris Crowe, deputy director for the non-profit Granny Basketball League and coach of the 2 Steps. Crowe is seeking grow the number of teams in the area, so encourages anyone who might be interested to come watch the games. All are welcome from those who played in high school or college and miss team competition to those who have not played basketball.
The six-on-six game is based on a time when women’s basketball was a milder sport. The floor is divided into three courts, and players can have up to two dribbles per possession. Running is not allowed, but “hurrying” is. With an emphasis on safety, players are not allowed to jump or have physical contact. Also, only three fouls are allowed. The modified league rules also award three points for underhanded “granny shots.” Spectators are frequently surprised by the fun, athletic moves and competitive spirit of Granny Basketball.
The Georgetown Fire Ants were the first Granny basketball team in Texas, and the team Texas 2 Steps are the local Conroe team and in their first year of competition. Other teams that will be participating are the Waco Six Shooters, Round Rock Rockettes, Harker Heights Old Glories, and the Louisiana Crushers.
The Granny Basketball League is a non-profit, Iowa-based organization founded in 2005. Currently, 42 Granny Basketball teams are active in 10 states with more than 500 players.
