Hazing Prevention Education Works
Data Analyzed From 90,000 U.S. Students Shows Hazing Prevention Education Succeeds in Changing Behavior and Intent
CLEARWATER, Fla., Sept. 12, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Data collected from 90,000 course completions of Hazing Prevention: It's Everyone's Responsibility™, an online course by AliveTek and HazingPrevention.Org, indicates student education is working.
The results were evaluated by The Center for Digital Education (CDE)*. Overall, survey results indicate positive course impact on a number of hazing prevention metrics. Over three-quarters of course-takers agree that after taking the course they feel more committed to prevent hazing. The results of the survey clearly show that students believe hazing is NOT ok. Ninety-one percent of students in the pre- and post-surveys find hazing unacceptable. In addition, post-course, 91% of students indicated they would be less likely to join an organization where hazing is expected to occur.

Studies have shown that 95% of hazing goes unreported, which is a large part of the problem in prevention. After taking the course, 77% of course-takers have reported feeling more inclined to report hazing, and one of the phenomena that has been seen on campuses who have been using the course is an increase in reports of hazing on campus. While this may startle some, Pualwan adds, "This is quite a good thing. We know hazing is occurring in the shadows. We will not be able to eradicate it until students feel safe coming forward and being part of the solution."

*Data was collected in pre-course and post-course surveys from August 2014 through May 2018. 90,016 students took part in the surveys from across North America. The CDE report confirmed that according to National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) data, demographics of survey participation matches national enrollment by gender and race (with less than a 5% difference).
