Heritage Woods of South Elgin Affordable Assisted Lifestyle Community to Host Anti-Senior Bullying Seminars
BRADLEY, Ill. (PRWEB) January 29, 2019 -- As part of an ongoing series on bullying, Heritage Woods of South Elgin is hosting a panel discussion and viewing of Gen Silent, a documentary that follows the lives of six lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) seniors who are forced to hide their sexuality to survive in the long-term health care system.
The viewing will begin at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 7 at the community, which is located at 700 N. McLean Boulevard in South Elgin. The original Jan. 31 date was changed due to the extreme winter weather conditions in the Chicago area.
Heritage Woods’ senior bullying series will identify bullying behavior, and outline how to create a positive environment that welcomes people from diverse backgrounds and experiences.
This week’s documentary discussion comes as LGBT adults are faced with the dilemma of remaining true to themselves or hiding their identity as they enter long-term care facilities.
In the past, the challenges that these seniors face has not been at the forefront in the senior living industry, and that is something that Heritage Woods of South Elgin wants to change.
“We are dedicated to providing supportive living and memory care communities that offer services to older adults free of discrimination and fear,” said Heritage Woods Administrator Scott Cozza. “We want everyone to feel welcome when they walk through our doors and decide to make our community their new home.”
Panel members will include Cozza, Heritage Woods resident Nancy Poor and Britta Larson from The Center on Halsted.
A light dinner will be served during the event, which is open to the public.
