HotelPlanner’s ‘Summer Vacation Habits’ Survey Reveals that 71% of Americans Will Take a Vacation This Summer
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (PRWEB) May 16, 2019 -- HotelPlanner.com, the world's number one online booking website for group travel, has published the results of its inaugural 'Summer Vacation Habits' survey.
HotelPlanner.com surveyed Americans to learn about their summer vacation plans. In a sign of a strong economy and a low unemployment rate, the survey shows that at least 71% of Americans plan on traveling this summer. Of those who indicated they are going to take a summer vacation, 43% indicated they would be taking more than one summer trip.
The top destinations show that the overall preference is to stay within the U.S., with the top destination being Orlando followed in turn by New York City (#2), Las Vegas (#3) and Los Angeles (#4).
Hotels are the accommodations of choice for vacationing Americans (47%) with Marriott and Best Western being the top choices. Airbnb is the second most popular lodging option (12%) and next in line is staying at a family home (11%).
The majority of Americans (79%) will be taking their summer vacations with family members; 26% will be vacationing with friends (and some family). Interestingly, 6% of Americans plan on taking solo vacations this summer.
In terms of budget, 38% of Americans budgeted $3,000 or more for their summer excursions while 32% budgeted $1,000 or less for vacation and 28% budgeted between $1,000 and $2,000 for their summer vacations. In terms of paying for those vacations, 57% of respondents will be using their savings while 7% will be using their tax return, alternatively 21% will be using a credit card to book their travel. Only 60% of Americans will be paid for their time while on vacation.
Many Americans plan for their summer vacations at the last minute with 15% of respondents saying they spend "less than one day" getting ready for their trips, 35% spend about one week planning, and 27% spend a month preparing. Alternatively, only 2% of Americans plan to the extremes, spending an entire year planning for their vacations.
Finances affect Americans' vacation habits
In what could be seen perhaps as a sign of the economy’s strength, 56% of respondents with household incomes of less than $50,000 are planning on taking a vacation this summer. Conversely, over 80% of respondents with a household income of $100,000 or more will be taking a vacation this summer. Just 12% of Americans won't be taking a vacation this summer due to financial constraints.
Where do Americans go on summer vacation?
Over 50% take their vacations within the U.S. The most popular international destinations are Canada (4%), Mexico (3%) and Europe (3%).
Americans prefer ‘doing nothing’ on their summer vacation and most look forward to relaxing and being with family
When asked what activities Americans had planned during their vacation, restaurants topped the list with 58% of Americans planning to dine out. The next most popular activities were the beach (48%), the pool (38%), doing "nothing" (38%) and museums (32%). When asked what they are most looking forward to, ‘relaxing’ (58%) and ‘being with family’ (48%) were the most popular choices.
Is a summer vacation a proper recharge for heading back to the office?
Survey respondents were asked if they typically feel recovered and ready to go back to work after a vacation, the results show that for the majority of Americans, a vacation isn’t enough to recharge. While 41% of Americans either ‘recharge quickly’ or are ‘always ready for work’ the majority of Americans (59%) either need more time away, their family gets in the way of relaxing or in general do not find vacations relaxing. For 20% of the total respondents, they claim that no amount of vacation would be enough to feel rested and recovered when going back to work.
Intimacy on Vacation
When asked about the quality of their intimate lives relative to vacation, 34% of Americans' intimate lives are "better than usual" on vacation; only 11% of Americans' intimate lives get worse on vacation, 55% of Americans have "about the same" intimate lives while on vacation.
Older Americans less likely to take a summer vacation
Even though 71% of Americans plan on taking a vacation this summer, only 62% of Americans 65 or older are going away when the weather is warmest. The oldest among us are even less likely to "summer": Just 44% of Americans 75 or older have plans to go away this summer.
