Intelligent.com Survey Finds 1 in 8 Prospective Students Refuse To Attend Florida Public Colleges Due To DeSantis' Education Policies
As Governor Ron DeSantis continues to push for drastic changes to the Florida education system, current and incoming students fear the impact on their education
SEATTLE, March 31, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Intelligent.com, a trusted resource for online degree rankings and higher education planning, has published a recent survey report that explores how Governor Ron DeSantis' conservative education policies affect current and prospective college students. Overall, 1,000 Florida students who disagree with DeSantis' education policies completed the full survey. Participants were either prospective fall 2023 college students currently still in high school or public college undergraduate students with at least a semester remaining.
Survey results show that 91 percent of prospective college students disagree with DeSantis' policies. Among this group, 27 percent say they are unlikely to attend a Florida state school, and 57 percent say they are likely to attend. Of those unlikely to attend a state school, 49 percent say it is due to DeSantis' education policies. Conversely, the top cited reasons prospective students will attend a state school, despite disagreeing with DeSantis' policies, are the school's location and the school's programs. However, 78 percent are concerned that his education policies will negatively impact their education.
Survey results also indicate that 79 percent of current public college students in Florida disagree with DeSantis' policies. Although most students who attend a public college or university will continue to do so in the fall despite disagreeing with DeSantis' education policies, 21 percent say they will 'definitely' or 'probably' transfer. Among those who are unlikely to transfer, 37 percent say it is due to financial reasons, and 36 percent say it is due to the school's location. However, 56 percent of respondents who will continue attending a state school are 'very concerned' or 'somewhat concerned' that DeSantis' policies will negatively impact their education.
The survey referenced in this article was commissioned by Intelligent.com and conducted online by the survey platform Pollfish on March 16, 2023. In total, the survey had 1,632 respondents, though only 1,000 respondents passed through all three screening questions and completed the entire survey. Participants were screened to ensure they are currently a high school student in Florida or undergraduate student at a public college or university in Florida, plan to be enrolled in an undergraduate program in the fall, and disagree with DeSantis' education policies. All participants also passed through demographic filters to ensure they were between ages 17 and 24 and had not completed education beyond high school.
