- Greater technological capabilities – Next-gen body worn cameras host wide-angle lenses which provide an increased field of view, as well as a greater ability to capture video in low-light conditions. Full HD video and high-fidelity audio provide for greater resolution and increased details in video and audio interactions.
- Easier to use – BWC and ICC systems have become much easier to use, which is critical for assisting busy officers in the field without requiring additional administrative duties. Next-gen BWC systems, in addition to being smaller and lighter than earlier versions, include automatic triggering, which enables them to automatically begin recording based on specific events, such as officer lightbar activation, vehicle exit or weapon release. This helps eliminate the concern of missing recordings while working in the field. Next-gen ICC systems have a reduced footprint resulting in less in-car clutter, and improved performance resulting in crisper video capture – even in low-light.
- Greater integration and less distractions – Finally, the newer body-worn and in-car video systems offer seamless integration between both systems. For example, in some next-gen systems, the officer’s body-worn camera doubles as the microphone for the dash camera video, enabling the two systems to collaborate and eliminating the need for an additional wireless microphone for capturing dash camera audio. Following a recorded event, the body-worn video is transferred directly to and stored locally in the dash camera system, where the responding officer can view all the videos associated with an event. This saves time and increases officer efficiency.
