Keeping the Spirit of Painting Alive: 12th Annual Art of Painting in the 21st Century Conference and Exhibition
The John Natsoulas Gallery is hosting the Art of Painting in the 21st Century, an annual conference and exhibition in its twelfth year, showcasing artists from around the world. The 2-day conference is geared towards nurturing dialog on contemporary painting and the shared ideas that define current trends in the field. Many painters work alone, an isolated process that deprives the artist of thriving debate until the work is shown. This year's exhibition and lectures will feature some of the most talented and well known artists working in painting today.

The Art of Painting Exhibition is a month-long exhibition that showcases work by professional artists as well as up-and-coming collegiate painters. The exhibition runs in conjunction with a 2-day conference that consists of lectures and hands-on demonstrations by prominent painters. This provides a unique opportunity and an intimate setting to interact with top artists. UC Davis, home to artist Roy de Forest, Roland Peterson, Wayne Thiebaud, and Robert Arneson, was instrumental in defining a new direction for a uniquely West Coast style. Nowhere else in the country will the participant be able to interact and discuss the purity of painting in one place. Meet face-to-face with distinguished artists you might only otherwise read about. This year, a collegiate exhibition of the top 20 young college student painters will be on display. Many awards will be given to these young artists that represent the future of painting. The conference is partially funded by the city of Davis.
The goal of the conference is to provide audiences with a variety of perspectives and allow interaction between students and professionals, fostering the strong tradition of painting and culture through exposure and discussion. Among the many painters that will be presenting at this years conference are Gregory Kondos, Chester Arnold, Richard Whitten, Glenn Brill, Tom Colcord, and Cynthia Sitton. Recognized as one of the world's most prominent California landscape artists, Greg Kondos has received numerous awards over the years for his masterful use of color and form. Chester Arnold spent his formative years in Germany where he studied at Private Teachers in Munich; his time in Germany exposed him to a European Sensibility toward the arts that is apparent in his still life paintings. Glenn Brill has been consulting with companies that make fine art materials for the past 20 years and will be presenting a hands-on demonstration showcasing oil and acrylic paints. Cynthia Sitton has a reputation for creating realistic figurative paintings that often convey autobiographical details about her family, emotions, and ideas about mental illness. This year's presenters, each with their own unique histories and artistic approaches, will be sure to put on an event worth remembering. Don't miss out on this incredible opportunity!
