Off the coast of North Vietnam during the Vietnam War, July 1967, the 5,500 crewmembers of the USS Forrestal (CVA-59) experienced “the worst naval disaster to befall a ship since World War II.” The Forrestal fire started with a surprising accidental rocket launch, followed by billowing smoke and an all-consuming fire. Then, the first 1,000-pound bomb explodes high-order.
From his personal recollection, collected firsthand accounts of other crewmembers’ deck logs and the official navy investigation, Killmeyer tells the story of how the fire claimed sailors and pilots, and seriously injured others. In March 1967, Kenneth V. Killmeyer became a crewmember of USS Forrestal (CVA-59), first of the super aircraft carriers. In 1995, he was offered the position of historian at the USS Forrestal Association. During his time as historian, Killmeyer began collecting personal experiences of crewmembers who were aboard along with him during the worst naval disaster to befall a ship since World War II.
