NEW YORK, June 06, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Hudson River Park Friends, an independent nonprofit dedicated to the completion, care and enhancement of Hudson River Park, is pleased to invite New York residents, businesses and visitors to kick off summer at the 5th annual Hudson River Park Games (HRPK Games) to be held on Saturday, June 22 on Pier 40 in Hudson River Park from 9 A.M. to 2 P.M., with an After-Party to follow. Conceived by Hudson River Park Friends, the HRPK Games are a celebration of the competitive spirit and generosity that make New York among the greatest cities in the world. Competitors will simultaneously experience and support this indispensable community resource and premier waterfront treasure that is Hudson River Park, the longest riverfront park in the United States, and New York's "Park for Play."
HRPK Games Pentathlon features five competitions; plus a championship round obstacle course. The top-scoring team wins the prestigious Hudson River Park Cup. The HRPK Games welcomes participants of all skill levels and is open to everyone – from local residents and businesses, to visiting out-of-towners.
"Nationally recognized for its expansive riverfront location and myriad of recreational assets, Hudson River Park is enjoyed by millions as a place of play, leisure and scenic beauty," said Connie Fishman, Executive Director of Hudson River Park Friends. "HRPK Games gives a sampling of some of the popular sports and activities enjoyed in the Park, coupled with some friendly competition, all for a good cause. Ticket sales contribute to our free public programs and to keeping the Park clean, green, safe and beautiful."
THE GAMES
Teams are assembled to compete in a Pentathlon consisting of a series of heats culminating with a championship obstacle course to determine who will take home the coveted Hudson River Park Cup. The Games include:
- DODGEBALL: A schoolyard classic; eliminate all opposing players by tagging them OUT
- VOLLEYBALL: Teams will take to the courts, playing a round-robin style tournament
- BASKETBALL: Relays that challenge teams' physical skills against the clock
- FLAG FOOTBALL: Teams play a modified game, where ballcarriers are downed by "deflagging", rather than tackling
- STEAL THE BACON: In this tag-based game, points are scored by "stealing the bacon" while preventing opponents from scoring
- CHAMPIONSHIP OBSTACLE COURSE: A series of challenging physical obstacles that test speed, agility, balance and endurance
