Legends Longhorn Sale and Futurity to host inaugural event in Duncan, the Heart of the Chisholm Trail
Event to be held Sept 4-5 at the Stephens County Fair & Expo Center
DUNCAN, Okla., Aug. 24, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Legends Longhorn Sale and Futurity will have its inaugural event on September 4th and 5th in Duncan OK, at the Stephens County Fair & Expo Center. This exciting Texas Longhorn event will commence with a futurity on Friday morning and lasting most of the day. The event will include speakers throughout the day discussing livestock health and nutrition as well as vaccinations in the first talk. The second talk will be by Oklahoma Cattlemen's Association regarding the Beef Quality Assurance Program. After lunch, Neogen will be offering a presentation regarding DNA sampling and the importance of implementing this into any livestock program. On Friday evening, the event will offer a powerful heifer sale starting at 5:30.
The event organizers have Texas Longhorn producers coming in from all over the country. The driving force for this event's large turnout in entries is contributed to the outstanding prizes that will be awarded. The Grand Champion bull and Grand Champion female will each receive a 16-foot aluminum bumper pull stock trailer made possible by their outstanding sponsors. Reserve grand bull and female will receive a P&C working chute a custom-made chute specifically for Longhorns cattle. Class champions will also be receiving a rifle, as well as cash.
This event is based around five females and five sires within the industry that have made significant genetic contributions to the industry. The hosts anticipate several heifers to sell for over $10,000 with a few potentially generating $30,000 per head. With the numerous outstanding consignments, they've received phone calls from coast to coast by attendees that are planning on coming to Duncan, OK to be a part of this prestigious event with the intent of taking some of these phenomenal Texas Longhorns back home to grace their pastures.
Post-civil war, the Texas Longhorns were driven up the trail and then shipped back East via the railroad. In this amount of time, the breed was almost driven to extinction. With large English influence breed of cattle being integrated into the country for heavier carcasses and better average daily gains continued to hold the Texas Longhorns at bey. There were a handful of ranches that saw the importance of preserving this iconic breed and worked to save them. These 7 families are still recognized and their breed registry with all lines of cattle tracing back to them. In 1964, the Texas Longhorn Breeders Association of America was founded in Lawton, OK, which was later moved to Fort Worth, TX where it remains today.
The name for this event reflects the Legends that not only help preserve this breed, but also the Pioneers of yesteryear that helped build a fantastic nation that we still hold near and dear to our heart.
