Leveling the Field - Allowing Everybody to be In Sync with the Dynamic Field of Materials Science, Without Having to Resort to Costly Subscriptions
SINGAPORE and LONDON (PRWEB) October 29, 2018 -- Omics International, one of the staunchest proponents of the open access movement celebrated the 10th International Open Access Week from 22nd October to the 28th October, 2018. This year’s theme- “designing equitable foundations for open knowledge,” was a reflection of a scholarly system in flux. It was an appraisal of the open access policies and practices implemented by governments, universities, publishers, funders, and scholars that attempted to find out whether the open access movement has succeeded in achieving its goals of equity and inclusivity.
Dr. Srinubabu Gedela, the CEO of Omics International and Pulsus has stated that open access scientific publishing is removing language barriers. Dr. Gedela added, "The open access publishing industry is still working on the improvisation to reach even the remotest corners of the globe with cost-effective, affordable and free scientific information."
Materials Science is an interdisciplinary field that involves leveraging the fundamental properties of matter to design, develop, and manufacture real products. The field has contributed to technological advancements in sectors as diverse as national security, information technology, telecommunications, medicine and health, structural engineering, textiles, plastics, agriculture, aerospace, transportation, and environment, and therefore wields a huge economic footprint.
Materials Science is moored in the marriage of elements of applied chemistry and physics to domains as diverse as mechanics, electronics, thermodynamics, biology, and manufacturing and production. The importance of materials in the society can be evidenced by the fact that specific historical ages have been named after them. Presently materials science is at the forefront of public consciousness due to the spotlight of the media on the utility of biomaterials, nanomaterials, and electronic and optical systems.
The energy and vitality of this area of research are palpable, a case in point being the introduction of machine learning into this domain for understanding the basic properties of atoms. In these dynamic times of prolific innovations, researchers in materials science are stymied by a lack of access to the entire corpus of research in the field, as no library can afford the subscription to all relevant journals; librarians are under immense pressure to subscribe only to a few ‘‘core’’ journals, thus limiting cross-fertilization between disciplines. Importantly, the endorsement of “permission barrier” removal by the open access movement ensures that teaching and research are not limited by licensing and copyright restrictions.
Omics holds one of the most sizeable open access journal portfolios in materials science. Publishing with Omics makes scientific research freely available, immediately upon publication; high-quality peer-review and production practices guarantee the originality and reliability of the research.
During the Open Access Week 2018, Omics reiterated its commitment to the policies of open access publication and philosophy; Editors, readers, and scientific contributors were invited to provide their valuable inputs with respect to the removal of potential inequalities in open access publishing policies, while simultaneously keeping in mind the needs of the stakeholders.
As a part of the special activities being conducted during the Open Access Week, authors submitting their manuscripts to any of the Materials Science journals were recognized as being integral part of the open access movement. In order to encourage greater participation and awareness among students, minimal processing charges were levied in the duration of the Open Access Week.
All the authors, Editors, and reviewers participated in this event, thereby making their own personal contribution to the Open Access movement, and making this event a great success.
