Livability.com & Fourth Economy Announce Top 10 Remote-Ready Cities in the US
New data-driven list ranks the best cities for remote workers.
FRANKLIN, Tenn., Jan. 26, 2021 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Livability.com has released its Top 10 Remote-Ready Cities in the US rankings in partnership with Fourth Economy, a national community and economic development consulting firm that equips change agents with the tools to build better communities and stronger economies.
When the pandemic hit last year, millions of people transitioned to working remotely with little to no time to adjust or prepare. Despite the circumstances, employees and employers quickly realized that this massive virtual work experiment was successful, and many major companies announced they'd be extending their work-from-home policies through at least 2021, if not indefinitely, raising a big question for countless newly remote workers: If you could work from anywhere, where do you want to live?
To help answer that question, Livability partnered with Fourth Economy to determine the Top 10 Remote-Ready Cities in the U.S.:
1. Columbus, OH
2. Grand Rapids, MI
3. Bellingham, WA
4. Oak Park, IL
5. Fort Collins, CO
6. Frederick, MD
7. Sacramento, CA
8. Albuquerque, NM
9. Tucson, AZ
10. Duluth, MN
The rankings were determined by combining data from Fourth Economy's Community Index and data from the Livability's 2020 Top 100 Best Places to Live list, as well as the BLS Job Flexibilities and Work Schedule (2017-2018), and median download and upload speed data from the Measurement Lab Internet Speed (2020).
Other ranking metrics included:
- Broadband access
- Number of local jobs that can be done from home
- Affordability
- Strength of the regional economy
- Quality of life
"Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, 42% of people have either moved or thought about moving, and many of them are taking their jobs with them," says Winona Dimeo-Ediger, editor-in-chief of Livability.com. "This is a huge opportunity for cities to attract new residents, and the 10 cities on this list are perfect examples of places with the infrastructure and amenities remote workers are looking for."
"The migration patterns resulting from the shifting work norms will change the core demographics of many communities," says Rich Overmoyer, president and CEO of Fourth Economy. "Our data-driven analysis shows that these remote-ready cities are places that people want to live in and thrive in the new world of work."
