Matthew A. Weissman, MD, MBA, Appointed Chair of Medicine at Mount Sinai Beth Israel

Weissman, MD, MBA, a prominent physician in medicine and medical education, has been named Chair of the Department of Medicine at Mount Sinai Beth Israel (MSBI) and Senior Faculty in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. The department he will lead includes more than 175 employed faculty and more than 120 residents and postdoctoral fellows.

Previously, Dr. Weissman was the Chief Medical Officer of Community Healthcare Network (CHN), a major Federally Qualified Health Center network in New York City. In that role, he oversaw the quality of clinical care and the operations of 14 clinical sites in the organization, supervising departments including physicians, nurse practitioners, nursing, front desk staff, custodial, and nutrition. Under his leadership, CHN was able to expand both access to and quality of care, including winning the Health Center Quality Leaders Award three years in a row from the Health Resources and Services Administration, an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, which is the primary federal agency for improving health care to geographically isolated, economically or medically vulnerable populations. Following the passing of CHN’s President and Chief Executive Officer in May 2014, Dr. Weissman served as the organization’s Acting President and CEO until January 2015, during which time he helped create the first Nurse Practitioner fellowship program in New York State. Before CHN, he was the Medical Director of the Ryan-NENA Health Center, where he worked as liaison between the Center and MSBI residents to provide both quality primary care to patients and a robust and rich teaching environment to trainees.
Dr. Weissman received a Medical Doctorate and Master’s in Business Administration in Health Management from Tufts University. He completed his residency and chief residency at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York and is board certified in both Internal Medicine and Pediatrics. He currently co-chairs the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene’s Citywide Colon Cancer Control Coalition. He was, until recently, the co-chair of the Clinical Quality Committee and the Cardiovascular Project Committee of the Mount Sinai Preferred Provider System (DSRIP PPS) and a member of the Boards of Directors of the Community Health Care Association of New York State (CHCANYS) and AmidaCare. He is a Fellow of the New York Academy of Medicine. His primary interests are the transition of pediatric to adult care, leveraging technology to streamline delivery and improve access to and quality of care, and training the next generation of physicians and medical leaders.
