Memoir Narrates the Dramatic Life Circumstances of a Holocaust Survivor
LAS VEGAS (PRWEB) July 19, 2018 -- Sandra Scheller believes that every Holocaust survivor has a unique story to tell. In her award-winning debut publication titled “Try to Remember—Never Forget” (published by iUniverse), she narrates her mother’s Holocaust experiences and how she survived them.
Ruth Goldschmiedova Sax’s life story begins in Moravia in 1928. At the age of 11 in 1939, the Nazis invaded Czechoslovakia, and life changed for everyone. By 1941, the family found themselves getting off a transport train in Theresienstadt, where Ruth was forced to grow up quickly. She was shaved to prevent lice infestation, bathed in soup, wrapped her feet in paper to keep them warm in the winter while laying electric cable in the snow, and witnessed beatings and deaths of many. Separated from her father, she survived awful circumstances, only to be sent to Auschwitz in 1944, where she faced Dr. Mengele in the nude half a dozen times.
Finally, with God’s help and liberation, she was reunited in 1945 with her mother and father, a true miracle. Liberation was a challenge within itself, learning to survive on barely anything. As a 17 year old, she continued her education but was in a classroom of 12 year olds so that she could catch up. Later on, Ruth learned the skills needed to become a clothing and costume designer. Through letter writing with her childhood sweetheart that she met when she was 7 years old, Kurt Sax went back to marry her in Czechoslovakia and bring her to America. She knew she would be without her parents temporarily, making a vow to get them over one day. In America she was born again with freedom, love, a new language and a new way of life, which she has lived for over 70 years.
This memoir narrates the dramatic life circumstances that led her from her birthplace in central Czechoslovakia, to three concentration camps, and finally to her home in America. Ruth reminds readers to never give up, continue to have hope and that tomorrow will be a new day.
Scheller describes her work in documenting her mother’s life story as “nothing short of miraculous” because she was able to understand first-hand about her mother’s childhood while teaching the readers to “never forget.” The book also details who her mother is today and how she lives.
