Mesquite ISD teams with WRA Architects on design of new Choice Career High School
Unique School Design for Career-focused Education
DALLAS, May 14, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Mesquite ISD's Choice Career High School, currently in the design phase, is the centerpiece of the District's plan to address the growing population of students in its existing five high schools. This new campus will offer a unique option for a career-focused education to high school students from across the District and will serve as the home campus for those students who choose this path. The 250,000 SF campus will feature four schools with multiple programs within each: School of Technology, School of Engineering, School of Construction Science, and School of Health Sciences.
"WRA has welcomed the challenge given to us by Mesquite Independent School District," says Partner Keith Anderson, AIA, "to reimagine the secondary educational learning environment with the District's new Choice Career High School. Just as the curriculum at this new campus will break with the traditional high school experience for its students, so, too, will the building itself provide a completely new setting for these career pathways."
The building's architecture mirrors the career and professional focus of its curriculum offerings, taking its cues from university and commercial office buildings. Envisioned to look more like a high-tech office complex than a traditional high school, this new concept will serve 2,000 students, and unlike the District's traditional high schools, the Choice Career High School will not offer extracurricular programs like fine arts and athletics; rather, the curriculum will be intensely focused on academics and career or college preparation.
"The outpouring of community support has been gratifying throughout this process from an overwhelming majority of bond votes and feedback. We are grateful for our partnership with Dr. David Vroonland and Mesquite ISD," Partner Graham Baumann, AIA, shares, "on such a forward-thinking concept geared towards putting students' needs first. The MISD team has been able to collaborate with the community on understanding the needs of future students and teachers, casting a clear vision of the aesthetics and function of the new school."
