National Association Creates Standards of Practice and Scope of Services for the Physician Advisor Role
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (PRWEB) November 12, 2019 -- The Association of Physician Leadership in Care Management (APLCM), a non-profit membership association that supports physician advisors and the integrated healthcare case management team, announces the creation of standards of practice and scope of services for the physician advisor role. These standards of care were designed to guide the healthcare industry by clearly outlining the requirements and competencies needed to function in today’s ever changing and demanding physician advisor role.
“The physician advisor is the primary liaison who transmits timely and accurate information between attending physicians, case managers, utilization review, IT and hospital administration,” said APLCM President Robert Grant, MD, MSc, FACS, physician advisor and chairman of the Utilization Management Committee at New York Presbyterian hospital. “As the delivery of high-quality patient care in the most cost-effective manner becomes ever more important, the physician advisor role continues to evolve in dynamic and impactful ways.”
To understand the interdependencies among all who provide care coordination and utilization management services, APLCM worked collaboratively with the American Case Management Association in developing the physician advisor standards.
The standards are designed as a framework demonstrating the competencies and skill set that can be expected of physicians in leadership roles in care management. They can be considered as a template upon which physicians new to the field, as well as experienced care management physician leaders can measure their own abilities and skill sets.
“Our goal is that the standards will help physician colleagues, case managers and administrators better understand the tangible fund of knowledge that highly skilled physician advisors possess,” Grant said.
The physician advisor standards address the topics of professionalism, leadership, advocacy, accountability, communications, collaboration, regulatory knowledge, continuum of care perspective and data literacy.
The physician advisor scope of services outlines the general expectations and responsibilities of the role on the topics of advocating, care progression and transitions, education, utilization management, medical necessity reviews and compliance, and clinical documentation.
