Baker Electric, a full-service electrical, solar and storage contractor serving the San Diego area and beyond, recently completed a state-of-the-art rooftop solar installation for Nazareth School San Diego, a part of the Sisters of Nazareth organization. The 108 kW DC system is estimated to save the school more than $38,000 in electric bills in the first year alone, with a total estimated savings of more than $1 million throughout the 25-year warrantied life of the solar modules. Baker Electric helped Nazareth School finance the project via a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with $0 out-of-pocket cost for the customer.
Cutting the cost of electricity was the main goal for the 501(c)(3) nonprofit when making the leap to solar, but reducing impact on the environment was just as important.
"Because Nazareth School is a school, we thought it would be a good lesson in protecting the environment for the students," said John Williams, CEO for Nazareth School San Diego and Nazareth House of San Diego. "It would be a topic of conversation for them as part of their education."
The school's mission is focused on helping its students grow not only academically, but also emotionally, culturally and spiritually. What began as "The Orphanage" in 1924 evolved into a well-rounded, multi-value curriculum rooted in the Catholic faith. Students are taught to respect themselves, each other and the community as a whole. The new solar system will be a part of those values by acting as a visual representation of the importance of protecting the environment for generations to come.
Nazareth School will see a significant decline in overall energy consumption from SDG&E, resulting in an estimated 76 percent reduction in annual electric costs. These savings will allow the school to focus its funds on other important areas geared toward helping the students achieve their academic goals.
