New Book Tells a True Story of Immigration and Assimilation in its Heyday
VINELAND, N.J. (PRWEB) October 10, 2018 -- In 2004, Joseph M. Orazi wrote the documentary script, “Prisoner Among Us,” about Italian American immigration, assimilation and the events leading up to World War II. The research peaked his interest of his heritage, which then eventually prompted his desire to make history more accessible to a larger public. Hence, he penned the historical fiction, “L’America” (published by AuthorHouse).
This first book of a series charts the story of three families who immigrate to America on the same steamship in 1915. It follows their journey through subsequent generations, as they make a way for themselves and their descendants through 1946. For 13 days, these families share brutal passage in steerage. But the voyage is only the beginning of their trials. Eventually, they settle in New York City, Cleveland and Monterey, California. While immigration in the early 20th century was difficult at best, assimilation proved to be an even greater challenge.
In “L’America,” Orazi shares a true story of immigration and assimilation in its heyday. Written in a poignant and succinct manner, the novel gives a glimpse of the confused and frightened Italian emigrants as they make their way to the land of the free. It tells of the harsh reality of discrimination, generational conflict, socialism, anarchism and fascism they had to endure.

About the Author
Joseph M. Orazi received a bachelor’s degree in English and theater from Villanova University. His plays have been produced in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Chicago. His work, “The Lion and the Lamb” won him a Pennsylvania Playwright Fellowship. In addition to writing numerous TV and radio commercials and industrial films, Orazi was a staff writer for the ABC daytime drama, “Ryan’s Hope.” He is also an accomplished lyricist. His song, “Recue You, Rescue Me,” received a 2016 nomination for an American Songwriting Award. The documentary film, “Prisoners Among Us,” which he wrote and associate produced, won the grand jury prize for best documentary at the New York Independent Film Festival. He is currently working on book two of the “L’America” series, continuing the stories of three emigrant families. Joe and his wife, Kathy, were married in 1973. They have two children, Gena and Scott, and a granddaughter, Arabella.
