New Memoir Highlight’s Former Physician’s Experiences With Gender Bias in the Medical Field
PITTSFORD, N.Y. (PRWEB) February 04, 2019 -- As an emergency physician, Dr. Pandora B. Angel was a successful woman in her field. Her expertise in patterns of abuse provided a lens to identify gender inequality in her profession. In her memoir, Angel uses her personal experiences to advocate for cultural change and equality for women everywhere.
“Elusive Equity, Empathy, and Empowerment: One Woman’s Journey Through the Challenges of Gender Bias in the Early Twenty-First Century” is an empowering partial memoir of one woman’s experiences of the gender bias and inequality while achieving a career in medicine. Angel recounts in the book many times where she experienced gender bias and workplace inequality, from minor instances, such as objectification based on appearance, to larger ones, such as pay inequality based on gender.
The book aims to expand the understanding of persistent gender bias in the workforce and promote action for cultural change and equality for all. The first half of the book provides a social context in relation to the author’s personal experiences with gender bias and inequality. The latter half of the book provides examples of workforce control and solutions to proactively address these instances.
“Sexual harassment is just the tip of the iceberg of inequality in the workplace. Through the expanded ‘Me Too’ movement, women and supportive men are demanding diverse and moral leadership. Workplace abuse of power is unacceptable,” Angel said. “Cultural change is needed. Bad behavior in academia persists because there is inadequate accountability. Those that attempt to improve the work environment, especially women, are often retaliated against or removed from the environment entirely. This eventuality completely disregards and devalues the welfare of women.”
In “Elusive Equity, Empathy, and Empowerment,” women can find solace and inspiration in Angel’s story, knowing they are not alone in the struggle for equality.
