New Memoir Pays Homage to History of African-American People of Coeymans, New York During Time Leading up to Civil Rights Movement
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (PRWEB) January 22, 2019 -- In celebration of African-American History Month, author and visionary leader James L. Lipscomb has released “I Got Shoes: A Memoir.” Rich with the little-known history of the African-American people of Coeymans, New York, during the first part of the 20th century, Lipscomb delivers an informative look at life for a specific part of the African-American community during the time leading up to, and during, the Civil Rights Movement. He invites readers into the lives of the community members during a bygone era who helped shape him into the man he is today and how growing up in Coeymans during this important time became the impetus for his desire to attend college.
Lipscomb chronicles the first 25 years of his life from the humble beginnings, struggles and achievements that lead him on his incredible journey to law school and success, while also sharing his perspective of growing up as an African-American during this time in history and how his life was impacted by the environment around him.
“Most of the adults I knew while growing up in Coeymans never finished high school and while most of their children did finish high school, few, if any, went to college,” said Lipscomb. “Getting and keeping a job was given priority over going to college, however, apart from a constant struggle, there was a broadening of my worldview that intensified my desire for a better life.”
Through hard work, dedication and perseverance Lipscomb was ultimately able to obtain the college education he desired; graduating from several universities including Howard University, Columbia University and New York University School of Law. He went on to become an award-winning executive vice president and general counsel of a Fortune 40 public company, held numerous leadership positions in local, state and national organizations and is admitted to practice law in New York, California, federal courts and the US Supreme Court.
One of Lipscomb’s proudest achievements happened in 2004 when he cofounded the Center of Hope (Haiti), Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation created for the purpose of developing and operating an orphanage and school in Hinche, Haiti. Inspired by his mother’s compassion and desire to help as many children in need as possible as well as knowing the importance of an education, Lipscomb and his charity help to provide homes for orphaned children and education for the poorest of poor children who would not otherwise be able to go to school.
Proceeds from “I Got Shoes” will be donated to Center of Hope (Haiti) which will also be celebrating 15 years of giving back on March 31, 2019. About the author
Author James L. Lipscomb has held leadership positions in local, state and national organizations, including the State Bar of California, the Association of the Bar of the City of New York, the Practising Law Institute, the Citizens Budget Commission of New York, the Citizens Housing and Planning Council of New York, and at Graffiti Ministries, Inc and is a member of the Economic Club of New York. As a former executive vice president and general counsel of a Fortune 40 public company and being known for his willingness to speak truth to power, Lipscomb has received numerous awards and accolades in recognition of his achievements. Some of these accolades include being named to Inside Counsel magazine’s 2006 list of the top fifty most influential in-house counsel in North America and being the 2009 recipient of the National Bar Association’s Heman Marion Sweatt Award for national achievement.
