New "Snoball Stand" to offer Louisiana youth lessons in business, starting in July
Pilot program will be open to 50 Acadiana youth participants, and comes with pay.
ACADANIA, La., June 30, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Acadiana youth are gaining experience running a business with Sneaux on the Geaux, a pilot program in the form of a snoball stand. Eckerd Connects Workforce Development is offering this opportunity in partnership with Acadiana Workforce Solutions.
This pilot program is giving up to 50 Acadiana youth a chance to work with Sneaux on the Geaux as a fully functional business. In addition to providing a sweet and cool treat to the community, the youth participants are also being paid for their work experience. They will have the opportunity to work with Sneaux on the Geaux for up to 300 hours earning $10 per hour.
"Providing youth, especially underserved youth, with the opportunity to gain hands on entrepreneurial experience, is an invaluable opportunity that wasn't previously available to our community," said Keidrian Kunkel, Eckerd Connects Workforce Development.
Acadiana Workforce Services has agreed to both subsidize the wages for the young adults assigned to Sneaux on the Geaux, and to use local funds to provide staffing support.
The job has its requirements, as well. Youth participants will be required to develop and promote their own personalized snoball flavor. That is the fun part!
The youth participants will also receive training required to obtain a National Retail Federation Customer Service Certification, ServSafe Food Safety Certification, and standardized entrepreneurship training through utilization of the National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship's curriculum.
Nationwide, Eckerd Connects operates over 50 workforce development programs for youth with paid work experience. The goal is to create a unique small business entrepreneurship component of workforce development services that can be replicated in other programs across the country.
Sneaux on the Geaux is currently in the rollout stage but will be mobile in all eight of the Acadiana parishes by the end of July. Local residents may find Sneaux on the Geaux at special events, farmer's markets, festivals, and other community activities.
