John Weyland, an ambitious, hardworking businessman, struggles with unscrupulous superiors and a wife who desperately tries to climb the social ladder. He meets Maria Nystrom, a sensitive woman, brilliant researcher. Maria's aspiration is to apply her knowledge of chemistry for the betterment of mankind, but she finds it difficult to achieve that in industry. John and Maria fall in love and are headed towards a more fulfilling, serene life when fate confronts John, who has always had difficulty making decisions, with a critical choice.
Set in suburban Philadelphia, "The Lady or the Tiger" conveys multiple themes of struggle. The characters fight against their own weaknesses, and they work against the demands of the business world while trying to reconcile that against their own aspirations and needs.
"The book depicts real-life episodes and challenges of the kind readers often face," says Lantos. "The story also gradually depicts changing life styles and confrontations that open up new issues and solutions." He hopes readers gain a better understanding of the behind the scenes aspect of industry, and the ability of a person to adjust to changes in his or her life.
