Newcomer House Presenting Two Porch Programs in May on the Antietam National Battlefield
May 13: Combat Readiness Through Medicine Talk and Book Signing. May 20 & 21: 19th Century Wet-Plate Photography Portraits and Cartes de Visite
FREDERICK, Md., April 28, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- The first, on Saturday, May 13 will feature historian, author, and musician George Wunderlich, Director of the Army Medical Department Museum, speaking about his new book "Combat Readiness Through Medicine at the Battle of Antietam," co-authored with Scott C. Woodard and Wayne Randolph Austerman. This in-depth research highlights important medical innovations and improvements gained from the deadliest one- day battle in US history, the Battle of Antietam, September 17, 1862. It was during this battle that the US Army solidified its emerging plan to decisively combat battlefield mortality, which marked the beginning of true combat readiness through medicine. Talks will be given at 11:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Free autographed copies of the book will be given out while supplies last.
The following weekend, May 20 and 21, photographer John Milleker will be at the Newcomer House demonstrating Civil War era wet-plate photography and talking about Cartes de Visite, small portrait calling cards that were particularly popular with troops during the Civil War. The public is invited to make an appointment to sit for and purchase their own tintype portraits. Active duty and military veterans will receive a discount in honor of Armed Forces Day.

The Newcomer House will be open from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.. Volunteer docents will be available to share knowledge about the Newcomer House and offer assistance to visitors to the three county Heart of the Civil War Heritage Area.
This is the seventh season of Porch Programs at the Newcomer House, HCWHA's Exhibit and Visitor Center at Antietam National Battlefield. Porch Programs feature presentations, demonstrations, pop-up exhibits, interactives and more from April through December.
