News: Xceed Financial Awards Scholarships to Eleven Outstanding Young Members
EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (PRWEB) August 07, 2018 -- Eleven impressive young high school seniors were recently selected from a nationwide pool of applicants to receive $1,000 each from Xceed Financial Credit Union to help further their educations. Named for Romeo Doty, a long-time Xceed Board member who dreamed of making higher education accessible for all students, the Credit Union’s Romeo Doty Scholarship program has awarded more than $140,000 in scholarship money since its inception. At the same time, a young member who is also the daughter of an Xceed associate was honored with the Credit Union’s $1,000 Chairman’s Xcellence Scholarship.
“Each year, our scholarship winners continue to impress us with their academic achievements, volunteer work, and commitment to their local communities,” said Xceed Financial President and Chief Executive Teresa Freeborn. “We’re so proud to have them as Xceed members, and delighted to be able to help them to pursue their educational goals.”
Honorees were chosen by the Credit Union’s scholarship committee. All applicants were required to have maintained a GPA of at least 3.5 and were evaluated based on academic performance, as well as extracurricular activities in their school and community. Each student also submitted a 60-second video about why they are deserving of the scholarship.
This year’s winners were chosen from an increasingly competitive pool of applicants. They include:
• Sierra Cheslick of Los Angeles, Calif.: A student entrepreneur, who started her own swimsuit business and plans to study biology or health sciences, having interned at a microbiology lab at UCLA and volunteered with Kaiser Permanente in West Los Angeles;
• Clare Ennis of Apex, N.C.: A future environmental or immigration lawyer, she served is the Vice President of Communications and the Crop Walk for Franciscan Youth International, which is dedicated to ending hunger and donates food to local food banks in Raleigh;
• Katherine Flanigen of Pittsford, N.Y.: A Rotary National Youth Exchange Ambassador, who graduated from high school in only three years and plans to pursue a career in medicine after interning with the neurosurgery department at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, N.Y.
• Claire Guo of Penfield, N.Y.: An aspiring optometrist, she received a University of Rochester Bausch and Lomb Honorary Science Award, was a research intern for the University of Rochester Laboratory for Laser Energetics, and volunteered for the Rochester General Hospital;
• Kerry Gettler of Pearl River, N.Y.: a future pre-law major planning to attend Cornell University, she held leadership positions in the Model UN, Youth in Government, and Girls Learn International, as well as served as a New York State Senate Committee Member;
• Kennedy Haywood of Culver City, Calif.: An aspiring FBI special agent, who has participated in the FBI’s Teen Academy three times and wants to protect his community and country from white collar crime or civil rights violations;
• Marissa Herwig of El Segundo, Calif.: A future doctor, who’ll be studying cell biology and neuroscience at Montana State University using experience she’s gained from volunteering at the Little Company of Mary Hospital in Torrance, Calif.;
• Kathryn Lovell of Webster, N.Y.: A 10-year Girl Scout veteran with plans to study environmental science and make a career as an environmental scientist, engineer or lawyer;
• Senna Marzo of Torrance, Calif.: Recipient of this year’s Chairman’s Xcellence Scholarship, who served as president of her Girl Scout troop throughout her high school career, organizing packing parties for military overseas among countless other volunteer and learning activities. She plans to study biology;
• Morgan Stewart of Fairpoint, N.Y.: A National Honor Society Member, who will embark on a five-year Master’s of Physician Assistant Studies beginning this fall at Duquesne University; and
• Nathan Shah of Portland, Ore.: An aspiring mechanical engineer in the aeronautics industry, he volunteers for the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry, where he designs and facilitates hands-on experiments for visitors.
