Alebrijes: Creatures of a Dream World comes to North Riverside Park Mall for restoration, in conjunction with Mexican Cultural Center DuPage
North Riverside Park Mall announced today that it is partnering with the Mexican Cultural Center DuPage to revitalize select Alebrijes from the 2022 Cantigny exhibition. The works will be on display at the mall as part of the Cartoneria: The Mexican Tradition of Paper Mache from now through May 7, 2023. The exhibition celebrates Mexican culture and the folk-art format seen primarily in Mexico City. The community is invited to participate in this one-of-a-kind exhibition with paper mache, painting and creature restoration alongside the artists from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. each Saturday in March.
"The Cartoneria exhibition picks up where the successful presentation at Cantigny Park left off," said, Jeanne Heller, marketing director for North Riverside Park Mall. "We are thrilled that North Riverside Park Mall guests have the opportunity to see three of the original artists at work restoring their creations before they head to their permanent locations."
Cartoneria is a Mexican Folk art form that involves the creation of decorative items using paper and cardboard. The term comes from the Spanish word "carton," which means cardboard. The process of cartoneria typically involves shaping and gluing layers of paper into the desired form, and then painting the finished product. Cartoneria artists often work in family or community workshops, passing down techniques and styles from generation to generation. Cartoneria is a broader and more recognized artform that includes the art of Alebrijes (pronounced ah-leh-bree-hehs) which refers to imaginary creatures that possess elements from different animals. They originated in the 1930s from the vivid dreams of Mexico City artist Pedro Linares. The artistic tradition of alebrijes gained popular exposure in the United States with "Coco," the 2017 Disney/Pixar film.
The exhibition at North Riverside Park Mall features three artists-in-residence restoring 22 paper mache sculptures that vary in size with some being larger than a typical SUV. The art pieces were previously housed outdoors at The McCormick Foundation's Cantigny Park for six months, and the elements of nature took a toll on the paper and paste creations. Some pieces will be completely stripped of existing paper mache, exposing the wire frames.
Artist Edgar Israel Camargo is in residence at the mall from now through April 5 and will be joined by artists Perla Miriam Salgado Zamorano and Alejandro Camacho Barrera from March 15 through April 19. Visitors will have the opportunity to learn paper mache and help restore several of the pieces under the guidance of the artists. Following the restoration all 22 sculptures will travel to other institutions for display with some being showcased as a permanent installation.
Visitors to North Riverside Park Mall can experience this one-of-a-kind exhibition from now through May 7, 2023. Guests will have the opportunity to participate with paper mache and creature restoration from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. each Saturday in March.
