Object Management Group Adopts Retail, Space, Command and Control, and Modeling Specifications at Q3 Members Meeting

NEEDHAM, Mass., Oct. 29, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- The Object Management Group® (OMG®), an international, open membership, not-for-profit technology standards consortium, adopted four new specifications and issued six new Requests for Proposals (RFP) and two new Requests for Information (RFI) at its quarterly members meeting, held from September 24-28, 2018 in Ottawa, Canada. The meeting was sponsored by No Magic, RTI, KDM Analytics and Sparx Systems.

Newly Adopted Specifications

The board of directors adopted the following submissions and reports: 

  • Command and Control Message Specification (C2MS) specification establishes format specifications to allow for common data exchange interfaces to integrate satellite mission ground data system products from multiple vendors and system developers.
  • Point of Service (WS-POS) 1.3.1 provides retail devices, POS terminals and servers with the capabilities to interoperate in a detached, dynamic network, as well as in more typical local area networks (LANs). WS-POS enables POS devices such as printers, scales and scanners to be connected to multiple transaction touch points such as POS terminals, mobile devices, and virtual POS terminals anywhere in the store or enterprise. With WS-POS, retailers can reduce their expenses by sharing POS device peripherals like printers and scanners across multiple POS terminals.
  • TACSIT Data Exchange is a standard-based interface to common TACtical SITuation (TACSIT) services. Command and Control (C2) systems are characterized by a huge variety of underlying computing platforms, with different and often incompatible means of providing interactive displays. TACSIT software components provide users with geographic tactical displays for awareness of entities in the operational space relative to a certain geo-spatial context. A standard-based interface to common (TACSIT) services is essential for interoperable and open systems.
  • UML Profile for ROSETTA adds an extension to UML® to enable the use of parameterized design patterns in support of constraint-driven design for architecture optimization and system design.

All existing OMG specifications are available to the public for free.

Six new RFPs were issued to solicit submissions for new standards. Organizations interested in submitting must send a letter of intent (LOI) by the LOI deadline indicated in the RFP document. Submitting a LOI is not legally binding and does not commit an organization to being part of a submission team. The RFPs are: 

  • DDS-TSN RFP seeks submissions to define rules for mapping DDS™ features onto Time-Sensitive Networking concepts in order to support the design, deployment and execution of DDS systems over TSN networks in a standardized fashion. Letters of Intent are due by March 20, 2019 and submissions are due by November 11, 2019.
  • CubeSat System Reference Model (CSRM) RFP solicits proposals to standardize CubeSat development based on the OMG Systems Modeling Language™ to lower the cost of development and increase the quality of CubeSat spacecraft and ground system design. Letters of Intent are due by February 28, 2019 and submissions are due by November 11, 2019.
  • FACE Profile for UAF RFP seeks proposals for a Future Airborne Capability Environment (FACE) Profile for use with the Unified Architecture Framework® (UAF®) to include elements of The Open Group FACE™ Technical Standard in UAF architectures. Letters of Intent are due by January 15, 2019 and submissions are due by August 26, 2019.
  • Simple Electronic Notation for Sensor Radiobeacons (SENSR) RFP seeks proposals for a metamodel to describe serialized data streams emitted by sensors, and how that data should be interpreted. This RFP addresses the new technology challenges of the IIoT. Letters of Intent are due by March 18, 2019 and submissions are due by May 20, 2019.
  • UnifiedPOS Fiscal API 2.0 RFP seeks to define the interface for specialized hardware and software from point of service vendors (POS vendors). The goal of this new specification is to reduce the time and effort required of point-of-service systems suppliers and retailers to fulfill reporting requirements for tax and government authorities. Letters of Intent are due by March 31, 2019 and submissions are due by August 26, 2019.
  • UPOSVer.1.16 Retail Communication Service Device RFP solicits proposals to make it easier to include humanoid robots in the retail point-of-service (POS). Letters of Intent are due by December 20, 2018 and submissions are due by February 19, 2019.

New Requests for Information Issued 

  • Command and Control User Definition Language RFI seeks input for a common data display exchange format so that mission control systems can be easily displayed from one software package to another. Responses from industry, government or academia with knowledge of user interfaces for monitoring and control are due by 5:00 PM US Eastern Time (typically 22:00 GMT) on March 11, 2019. One electronic copy in machine-readable format should be sent to [email protected]. All responses should be clearly marked with the name and OMG RFI document number (Space/2018-09-05).
  • MARTE 2.0 RFI seeks inputs from the community in which MARTE is used to account for new design and analysis techniques that have emerged since the inception of UML Profile for MARTE™ 12 years ago. Responses to this RFI must be received at OMG no later than 5:00 PM US Eastern Time (typically 22:00 GMT) February 15th, 2019. One electronic copy in machine-readable format should be sent to [email protected]. All responses should be clearly marked with the name and OMG RFI document number (ad/2018-09-04).
