Object Management Group Board of Directors Adopts OPC UA/DDS Gateway Standard
NEEDHAM, Mass. (PRWEB) July 02, 2018 -- The board of directors of the Object Management Group® (OMG®), an international, open membership, not-for-profit technology standards consortium, adopted the OPC UA/DDS Gateway specification at its members meeting from June 18-22 in Boston. The goal of the specification is to enable the OMG-based Data Distribution Service™ standard and OPC UA applications to interoperate transparently.
Data-Distribution Service (DDS™) is a family of middleware standards from OMG that provides connectivity, interoperability and portability for Industrial Internet, cyber-physical, and mission-critical applications.
In 2016, OMG and the OPC Foundation announced a joint strategy for DDS and OPC UA connectivity standards. Following that announcement, OMG members issued a Request for Proposals to define this standard, a bi-directional gateway that maps the operations and information flows in each technology (DDS or OPC-UA) to the other one so that an application using OPC-UA can consume information and services produced in DDS and vice-versa from DDS to OPC. Based on the industry response, OMG members developed the OPC UA/DDS Gateway specification.
According to OMG Chairman and CEO Dr. Richard Soley, “Today’s announcement is a milestone toward accelerating IIoT adoption because gateways are a critical component of system interoperability. I want to congratulate our members, RTI and ADLINK, who collaborated on this standard, which will be the gateway of choice for companies looking to connect data and information management in Industrial Internet applications ranging from smart grids, healthcare, transportation, military and aerospace, simulation, unmanned vehicles, automation to smart energy.”
