Object Management Group Chairs Present Key Updates to Technology Standards

NEEDHAM, Mass., Oct. 11, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- International technology standards consortium Object Management Group® (OMG®) announced important updates from its quarterly membership meeting, which took place on September 23-27, 2019 in Nashville, Tennessee.

The chairs of OMG Task Forces (TFs) and Special Interest Groups (SIGs) presented updates about their standards work that will influence the future direction of technology in a number of important areas including: artificial intelligence (AI), business modeling and risk management, software quality, space telecommunications, and many others. Here is a summary of the OMG Chair's accomplishments:

"The Artificial Intelligence Platform Task Force was chartered in order to give OMG a leading role in the definition of standards for foundational components of AI. These standards will smooth the way for suppliers and users of AI capabilities alike by making it easier to interchange components and data sets," said Claude Baudoin, Co-Chair, Artificial Intelligence Platform Task Force and Owner and Principal consultant at cébé IT and Knowledge Management.

"The Business Modeling & Integration Domain Task Force issued two Requests for Information: one to identify the needs and existing standards, models and languages for risk management (across all types of business as well as technical risks); the other one with similar questions regarding requirements management," said Claude Baudoin, Co-Chair, Business Modeling & Integration Domain Task Force and Owner Principal consultant at cébé IT and Knowledge Management.

"The Middleware & Related Systems (MARS) Platform Task Force (PTF) issued the Space Telecommunications Interface (STIs) for Software Defined Radios (SDRs) Request for Proposal (RFP) that seeks to expand the OMG's PIM and PSM for the Software Radio Components Specification to support space communications. It also issued the Blockchain Ecosystem Interoperability Request for Information to gather information about interoperability issues as they relate to distributed ledger technology (DLT or blockchain) systems as the first step in deciding the need for and future content of RFPs to develop in this area. MARS also issued the first in an anticipated series of CORBA™-related RFPs, an RFP to permit CORBA to support REST services," said Charlotte Wales, Co-Chair of the Middleware & Related Systems (MARS) Platform Task Force (PTF) and Lead Engineer, The MITRE Corporation.

"The Systems Engineering Domain Special Interest Group (SE DSIG) presented and demonstrated different aspects of MBSE including the CubeSat Systems Reference Model, Model Libraries in support of Production and Logistics, a demonstration of an early implementation of the Safety and Reliability Profile, an application that builds a digital thread across a multi-discipline engineering environment, open standards for enabling digital business transformation and a summary of the INCOSE systems engineering transformation initiative. In addition, there was a presentation and demonstration that previews the initial incremental release of SysML v2 submission, leading up to the initial submission in May, 2020," said Sandy Friedenthal, Chair Systems Engineering Domain Special Interest Group and Principal Systems Engineer at Lockheed Martin.

"The Analysis and Design Platform Task Force (ADTF) presented the following accomplishments at the Nashville OMG Technical Meeting: a SysML v2 Submission Status Update, API4KB Revised RFP Submission Update, MVF RFP Revised Submission Update, MEF Update and responses to the MARTE RFI. The ADTF had passed motions to change SysML V2 Language and SysML V2 API and Services RFPs revised submission date to May 17, 2021, voted to recommend adoption of MEF submission, change the revised submission deadline for MVF from August 2019 to February 24, 2020 and the revised submission and extend the revised Safety and Reliability, API4KB, IMM AMP and EMP RFP submission deadlines to February 24, 2020. Future deliverables also include the Safety & Reliability for UML and IMM revised submissions by February 24, 2020," said Dr. Jeff Smith, Co-Chair of the Analysis and Design Platform Task Force (ADTF) and Chief Systems Engineer, Multi Agency Collaboration Environment.

"The Consortium for Information and Software Quality, CISQ, a program managed by OMG, held a three-day workshop where industry experts outlined a specification for a Software Bill of Materials (SBoM). CISQ will develop it into a formal specification and submit it to OMG for approval as a standard," said Dr. Bill Curtis, Founding Executive Director, CISQ.

"The Cloud Working Group received approval to publish Version 3 of its comprehensive paper on "Cloud Service Agreements: What to Expect and What to Negotiate," and made progress toward creating a new paper on "Cloud Computing Adoption in the Retail Industry," said Claude Baudoin, Chair of Cloud Working Group and Owner and Principal consultant at cébé IT and Knowledge Management.

"At the Robotics Domain Task Force (DTF), the LoI deadline of RoSO (Robotic Service Ontology) is extended to March 16, 2020. The first draft of RoSO initial submission (to be submitted to June meeting) will be reviewed at Long Beach ahead of the LoI deadline," said Koji Kamei, Co-Chair, Robotics DTF, Senior Research Scientist JARA/NTT.
