Object Management Group Issues Two Retail Technology RFPs
RFPs address standards for fiscal printers and retail robots
NEEDHAM, Mass., Oct. 15, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- The Object Management Group® (OMG®) an international, open membership, not-for-profit technology standards consortium, has issued two new RFPs from OMG Retail: UnifiedPOS Fiscal API RFP and UnifiedPOS Retail Communication Service Device.
The Fiscal API RFP seeks to define the interface for specialized hardware and software from point of service vendors (POS vendors). The goal of this new specification is to reduce the time and effort required of point-of-service systems suppliers and retailers to fulfill reporting requirements for tax and government authorities.
"Fiscal laws vary by country and by type of retail within each country, making it difficult and expensive to implement and maintain equipment and software to comply with these laws," said Roland Zalisevskij, an author of the Fiscal API RFP as well as COO and co-owner of OMG member Service Plus Group in Serbia. The RFP for Retail Communication Service Device solicits proposals to make it easier to include humanoid robots, smart speakers, and IOT devices in the retail point-of-service (POS). The goal of this new specification would enable the use of the programming language and development environment of choice, while also permitting localization functional services to be selected. This would, for example, make it easier to set a robot to speak and understand local languages and use gestures appropriate to the retail scenario and geographic location.
"The rise of automated devices such as delivery drones, self-driving vehicles, and unstaffed checkouts, combined with a steep increase in international travel, lends urgency to the need for robots and other smart devices to support multi-lingual customer service in retail," said Toyoshiro Yasumoto, project manager in the retail solution division of OMG member Vinx Corporation. Both members and non-members of OMG may show their interest in participating in the process by submitting a Letter of Intent (LOI). The deadline for LOI submission for the Retail Communication Service Device RFP is December 20, 2018. The deadline for LOI submission for the Fiscal API RFP is March 31, 2019.
Chaired by John Glaubitz of Vertex Inc., Bart McGlothin of Cisco Systems, and Leonid Rubakhin of Aptos, OMG Retail has attracted a cross section of more than 80 retailers and technology vendors around the world.
