Orthopaedic Surgeon, Dr. Jeffrey Carlson, First Surgeon in Virginia Trained on the M6-C Artificial Cervical Disc Surgery
The M6-C disc provides better outcomes to patients traditionally receiving a spinal fusion.
NEWPORT NEWS, Va., Oct. 7, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Orthopaedic and Spine Center announced Dr. Jeffrey Carlson, Orthopaedic Spine Surgeon, became the first surgeon in Virginia to be trained on the M6-CTM artificial cervical disc.
Designed with a shock-absorbing nucleus and fiber annulus, which work together to mimic the anatomic structure of a natural disc, the M6-C provides an alternative to a spinal fusion. Studies show that patients have a better range of motion, more natural movement, and a reduced rate of opioid use for pain relief after surgery as compared to patients who have anterior cervical discectomy and fusion.
"I've been eager to use the M6-C disc since its release," said Carlson. "The technology provides patients with better outcomes, allowing them to get back to the life they love with minimal limitations. With its proven results, I knew I had to offer this to my patients."
The M6-C disc is designed to mimic the spine's natural structure and movement, including backward and forward, side to side, up and down, and rotate left and right. By allowing the spine to move naturally, the M6-C artificial disc potentially minimizes stress to adjacent discs and other vertebral structures. The M6-C disc received U.S. Food and Drug Approval in February 2019 with remarkable clinical improvement in pain scores including:
- 91.2 percent of patients who received the M6-C disc reported an improvement in neck pain compared to 77.9 percent in patients who underwent the anterior cervical discectomy and fusion procedure.
- 90.5 percent of the M6-C patients reported improvement in arm pain scores compared to 79.9 percent in anterior cervical discectomy and fusion procedure patients.
