People with Purpose to be Celebrated at 10th Annual HERS Breast Cancer Foundation Event
Popular annual fundraising dinner and awards gala to be held May 4 at Castlewood Country Club. Proceeds benefit charitable programs that support breast cancer survivors.
FREMONT, Calif., April 5, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- HERS Breast Cancer Foundation today announced a community awards gala to be held Saturday, May 4, 2019. The tenth annual awards event is called People with Purpose: A Pink Tie Gala. The awards recognize individuals and organizations who support breast cancer survivors and the foundation's programs.

The gala is held at historic Castlewood, an elegant hilltop venue with expansive views. The program for the evening includes a cocktail hour, entertainment, fundraising games, silent and live auctions, three-course dinner with wine, and award presentation. To cap off the night, a DJ will spin crowd favorites while attendees dance in celebration of honorees and breast cancer survivors. News anchor Heather Holmes from KTVU FOX 2 will be master of ceremonies.
Event proceeds will benefit HERS Breast Cancer Foundation programs, including "We Support, YOU Survive" which serves low-income women in need of post-surgical garments including bras and prostheses. The funds will also support the organization's Lymphedema Project, which provides special sleeves for the prevention and ancillary treatment of arm and hand swelling and pain caused by breast cancer-related lymph node removal. The Foundation assists clients with insurance claims and provides free products when needed. Funds are being raised through corporate sponsorship, donations, auction proceeds, and ticket sales.
This year's honorees include: Evelyn Paradis, owner of Pacific West Gymnastics and founder of "Barb's Pink Party"; Funda Dervisoglu, the top individual fundraiser for the Foundation's annual Walk/Run event; Dr. Ming Kuan, a Kaiser Permanente oncologist and advocate for breast cancer patients; and Stephanie Sullivan, Giving Hope Coordinator for Premier Nissan and Premier Subaru of Fremont.
Evelyn Paradis will be honored by HERS Breast Cancer Foundation for her efforts to raise awareness and funds through her yearly Barb's Pink Party event. Inspired by the illnesses of three loved ones – her mother-in-law, cousin, and employee -- Evelyn put her grief into action, establishing Barb's Pink Party in honor of her staff member and dear friend who did not survive her illness. Evelyn's team of loved ones, business clients, and employees work together each year to grow the event. Last October, their ambitious efforts were an unprecedented success, raising $20,000. Evelyn will receive the Hope Award because she works tirelessly to help HERS patients believe in a promising future.
Five years ago, Funda Dervisoglu's life took a sudden and devastating turn when her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. Funda quickly leveraged her problem-solving skills and high energy to become an advocate for her mother's treatment and an anchor for her family. Once her mother's illness abated, Funda knew she had to continue supporting breast cancer patients. Funda encouraged her circle of friends, family, coworkers, and other associates to get involved with HERS annual 5k/10k Walk/Run, and they've been our top Walk/Run fundraisers ever since. Funda will receive the Foundation's Empowerment Award in recognition of her leadership and the strength she inspires in others.
Dr. Ming Kuan is a San Leandro Kaiser Permanente oncologist who states that her patients are the reason she continues her work day after day. Seeing the need for seamless services for breast cancer patients, Dr. Kuan advocated for HERS to expand to San Leandro and was instrumental in the establishment of the Foundation's newest Program Store at that city's Kaiser Permanente Hospital. Opened in February 2019, the San Leandro location will help HERS better serve patients from communities beyond the Tri-Cities and Tri-Valley. Dr. Kuan is receiving our Renewal Award because her work as a physician and advocate for breast cancer patients helps them feel whole again, both emotionally and physically.
Stephanie Sullivan is the Giving Hope coordinator for Fremont Premier Nissan and Fremont Premier Subaru. In that capacity, Stephanie has advocated for HERS patients for many years, encouraging the dealerships' charitable board to support HERS through fundraising and sponsorships. Stephanie is also very "hands on," attending HERS events and interacting with staff to ensure that Giving Hope contributions continue to be a resource that sustains HERS patients. Stephanie's continued advocacy and dedication exemplify our Harriet Despeaux Award (formerly our "Support Award") in that she creates and sustains a community of compassion, aid, and advocacy for survivors and their loved ones.
