Phius Passive Projects Design Competition Winners Announced
Commending the Best Passive Projects in North America and Beyond, Awardees Were Honored for Their Accomplishments in Phius-certified Passive Building
CHICAGO, Nov. 7, 2022 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Today, Phius released the list of winners of its Passive Projects Design Competition. First announced during PhiusCon 2022, at the 8th Annual Passive Projects Design Competition Awards Ceremony, the juried competition recognized fully certified passive building projects of all types in all climate zones.
Entries were scored on a scale of 1-5 based on the following criteria: performance (as relates to the Phius Certified standard), difficulty level (climate/site/location challenges), cost-effectiveness, design, craftsmanship and health (e.g., use of non-toxic materials).
Winning and Honorable Mention Awards were given in five categories: single-family, multifamily, affordable, commercial/institutional and source zero. Additionally, two projects from the above winners were awarded: Best Overall Project and Best Project by a Young Professional (35 or under). This year also featured a Community Development Recognition, inspiring a new category for future competitions.

- High-Rise Multifamily (5 stories and above) Winner: 425 Grand Concourse | Bronx, New York by Dattner Architects
- High-Rise Multifamily (5 stories and above) Honorable Mention: 4697 Third Avenue | Bronx, New York by Curtis + Ginsberg Architects
- Low-Rise Multifamily (4 stories and below) Winner: Old Colony Phase 3C | Boston, Massachusetts by The Architectural Team, Inc.
- Low-Rise Multifamily (4 stories and below) Honorable Mention: Oak Tree Village | Griswold, Connecticut by Jesse Thompson - Kaplan Thompson Architects
- Commercial/Institutional Winner: Doig River Cultural Center | Moberly Lake, British Columbia by Peter Hildebrand
- Commercial/Institutional Honorable Mention: Bowdoin College Schiller Coastal Studies Center | Harpswell, Maine by Centerbook Architects & Planner

Winners were chosen by a panel of five jurors assembled by Phius and the Phius Alliance. Each juror met two of the following criteria: Phius Certified Consultant (CPHC®) or Phius Certified Builder, Rater or Verifier in good standing, has completed at least one Phius-certified project and/or is a licensed professional. Winners will receive one full year of Alliance membership and are featured in coverage of the conference by Green Building & Design magazine.
