CHICAGO, Aug. 12, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Pintas & Mullins Law Firm, the Chicago-based personal injury firm, has awarded its Law Firm Dangers of Vaping Scholarship to Lilla Lavanakul of Irvine, CA.
Miss Lavanakul graduated from the University of California, Irvine (UCI) in 2019 with majors in theater and business economics, and she has recently begun her first year of study at UCI's law school.
Her essay, like those submitted by many applicants, details the dangers of vaping. Miss Lavanakul's essay was very informative and highly personal. She, like almost every student in the U.S., was taught about the dangers of smoking at a young age.
"We've been taught our whole lives that smoking cigarettes is bad for you," she said.
But at 21, she is also in the demographic marketed to by e-cigarette companies, all with promises that vaping is a safe alternative to cigarettes with few health risks.
Her essay cites several medical studies that clearly lay out the risks of vaping, such as lung disease, nicotine exposure or poisoning, and burns from defective batteries that explode.
In addition, the sweet candy-flavor vapes lure children into trying them. "They know that they are targeting children," she said about these advertisers.
Even though her peers have grown up knowing that nicotine is harmful and can cause cancer, Miss Lavanakul estimates that perhaps half of her friends vape.
Recent viral videos of young people hospitalized with lung problems caused by vaping remind Miss Lavanakul of the two weeks that her younger brother, Will, spent in intensive care fighting for his life when his asthma became out of control. That was a decade ago, and Will is now a healthy college student at the University of California Berkeley.
Miss Lavanakul grew up in Dublin, CA, the daughter of Tai and Tan Lavanakul, immigrants from Thailand who came to California to study computer engineering. She graduated college in three years and was selected to the UCI chapter of Phi Beta Kappa.
The year between graduation and law school allowed her to pursue her other passion – acting. She is established enough to maintain her own IMDB page.
