Quantum Spatial to Showcase How Utilities Use Remote Sensing and Analytics to Identify Vegetation Risks at ISA Southern Conference
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (PRWEB) April 08, 2019 -- Quantum Spatial, Inc. (QSI), the nation’s largest independent geospatial data firm, today announced that it will be presenting at the ISA Southern Chapter 77th Annual Conference and Trade Show, today at 4 p.m. Eastern. In a lightning round session entitled “Condition-Based Maintenance: Threat Mapping in the Transmission Right-Of-Way using Remote Sensing,” QSI will discuss how it has employed a novel application of remote sensing and analytics to effectively identify vegetative risks from the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) along transmission right-of-ways. The presentation will be at the Renaissance Mobile Riverview Plaza Hotel.
Jacob Hall, vice president of Energy Sales-Utilities at QSI, will be among speakers who share insights into how to identify dead and dying trees that pose a significant potential threat to the reliability of the electrical grid.
“Conventional cycle-based maintenance programs cannot adequately address the risks posted by the Emerald Ash Borer,” said Hall. “We worked with utilities to collect hyperspectral and LiDAR data over transmission rights away, and used sophisticated analytics and machine learning to identify and predict vegetative risk based on the proximity, genus and health of trees with high accuracy.”
QSI leveraged vegetation segmentation routines and electrical wire models used in vegetation proximity analysis to produce quantitative geospatial maps. A supervised classification using support vector machine (SVM) algorithms then produced genus level predictions for individual canopy segments. Hall will explain the effectiveness this approach leveraging high-resolution LiDAR and hyperspectral data for utility vegetation management, as well as how high-performance computing (HPC) environments can be used to scale this methodology for system level adoption in a time effective manner.
Quantum Spatial also will be exhibiting in booth 108. For more information, contact Jacob Hall at jhall (at) quantumspatial (dot) com.
