RBMA Coding Academy Advances Radiology-Specific Coding Education
FAIRFAX, Va. (PRWEB) May 02, 2019 -- Coding radiology services is among the most complex forms of medical coding. Radiology coders must be familiar with more than just coding regulations. They also need to memorize the acronyms used in the field and have a working knowledge of imaging tests and procedures, as well as the conditions that make various radiology services medically necessary.
To address the need for in-depth radiology-specific coding education and networking, the Radiology Business Management Association has ramped up coding education through the RBMA Coding Academy. In 2019, there are five in-person workshops and webinars—more than double the offering in 2018—as well as three online courses for compliance training, business knowledge and radiology certified coder exam preparation.
In addition, for the second year in a row, the RBMA’s national conference, PaRADigm, included a special pre-conference coding seminar—this year expanded from a half day to a full day of education—and coding-specific education within the regular conference offerings.
“One of the many things that sets RBMA education apart is that it is peer based,” said Sarah Mountford, RBMA president and vice president of Client Services at Zotec Partners, LLC. “The programs are developed by RBMA members who are coding experts, based on their direct experience with current coding issues. The classes are taught by instructors actively working in the radiology coding field. Radiology coding education is a cornerstone of RBMA’s educational offerings, and we are proud to present these expanded opportunities through our Coding Academy.”
Response has been very positive with many attendees attracted by the networking and mentoring opportunities as well as the education, explained Karna Morrow, CPC, RCC, CCS-P, director of education and training at Coding Strategies Inc. and chair of the RBMA Coding Committee.
“The level of interest is very high,” she said. “Radiology truly has nuances to the code set and expectations for coding and compliance that are not required of any other specialty. We are the only specialty that is dependent on information from the referring physician for correct coding, so we have to have better investigative skills and communication skills to obtain that information.”
For radiology coders, RBMA also includes coding-specific news, a closed members-only online community forum for sharing advice, and discounts on products like the coding books and Radiology Coding Certification Board (RCCB) exam preparation materials. Upcoming RBMA Coding Academy events include:
