Raw Science Film Festival Takes Lil Buck to the Moon and 'First Man' Across the Universe
The festival showcases the power of art to tell the stories of science
LOS ANGELES, Feb. 6, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- The 5th Annual Raw Science Film Festival occurred on January 26, 2019 in Los Angeles at the historic United Artist Theatre. It coincided with Sundance Film Festival in order to provide a science-focused alternative to filmgoers. The festival aims to bring not just science but the award ceremony experience to audiences in entirely new ways.
The live event, emceed by Paul Hynek, celebrated the 50th lunar landing anniversary. The event was sponsored by communications pioneer Nokia Bell Labs E.A.T. and partner HISTORY's new dramatic series Project Blue Book. Nokia Bell Labs is bringing 4G mobile coverage to the moon in 2019.
James R. Hansen, author of First Man: The Life of Neil A. Armstrong, accepted the "Kip Thorne Gravity Award for the Best Depiction of a Scientific Principle" on behalf of NBC Universal for the powerful, visceral portrayal of gravity in First Man. Kip Thorne, Nobel Prize winner for the discovery of gravitational waves, presented the award. Hansen also accepted "The Sammy Award" for Pro-Social Media as awarded by producer and philanthropist Peter Samuelson, the producer of Revenge of the Nerds. Shameik Moore's manager Tony Pizarro, producer for Tupac Shakur, accepted the Arthur C. Clarke Center for Human Imagination Prize in Speculative Media from Erik Virre for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Rory Kennedy won the Industry Award for Best Documentary for Above and Beyond.
The judging panel honored a wide range of films, including Burden of Genius, Team Mars, Madame Mars: Women and the Quest for Worlds Beyond, Immortality or Bust, Never Give Up: The Journey of Bassett Robotics, and Nobody Dies in Lonyearbyen.
Pianist and scientist Chase Morrin opened the night with Clair de Lune. Lil Buck, an Icon of Modern Art, performed a moonwalk that defied gravity. A new track called "Everybody Gets to Go to the Moon" was performed by Susaye Greene and Sherrie Payne, formerly of The Supremes, and Joyce Vincent. Special guests included Sydney Colston of Behind the Groove, Sheldon Reynolds of Earth Wind & Fire, Richie Onori , and Spencer Galbraith. WISH 107.5 broadcast live from the red carpet.
